RARELY HEARD RADIO & TV SESSIONS FROM JOHN PRINE S EARLY CAREER. John Prine had been performing on the Chicago Folk Scene for a couple of years before being discovered by Kris Kristofferson, who announced at the time, he writes songs so good, we ll have to break his thumbs . In 1971, the man s self-titled debut album was released, and shortly thereafter a most astute BBC invited Prine to their studios for a BBC film which was screened on the channel. Featuring six cuts from his aforementioned debut, interspersed with some typical Prine chat, this show may have been the first televised performance in which John Prine was featured. A couple of years later, in 1973, Prine was invited back to the BEEB, this time to record a session for Radio 1, by which time his sophomore record had been released, and he featured eight songs from his two LP s to date. Both these sessions now feature on this CD for the first time. John Prine has remained a BBC favourite, particularly of evergreen D.J. Bob Harris, who continues to feature Prine in session and on record to this day, via his late-night shows. In 2003, largely thanks to Bob s continued support, Prine was awarded a well-deserved Radio 2 Lifetime Achievement Award for songwriting.
