Symphonies 3 - Nos. 4 & 5 - Dreams Op. 6
Prokofiev/Karabits
CD Rel Date: 1985-07-10
Kirill Karabits and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra continue their critically acclaimed Prokofiev Symphony cycle. This eagerly awaited third volume features the original version of the Symphony No. 4, probably the composer's least performed symphony, coupled with Symphony No. 5, arguably the most performed. The 4th was commissioned by Serge Koussevitzky to mark the 50th anniversary of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and is based on material from the ballet The Prodigal Son. The 5th dates from 1944 at the height of the Russian struggle against the Nazi invasion. Prokofiev once again pulls from his previous work as the slow movement draws on music composed in 1936 and intended for Alexander Pushkin's film The Queen of Spades.
