Luis Humberto Salgado was one of the most remarkable figures in Ecuadorian art music. The originality of his output is exceptional for uniting national musical traditions with the challenges of 20th-century modernism. The Sonata Dramática and Quadrivium share a unifying, cyclical technique, whereas Salgado's evolution from free-flowing eclecticism via a more explicit connection to Ecuadorian musical idioms is evident in the Second Sonata. More abstract and expressionistic than it's predecessors, the Third Sonata is predominantly atonal but with an overall sense of clarity. All of these pieces reveal a Latin American composer of striking originality who sought to preserve Ecuador's musical heritage while transforming it through a bold and forward-looking artistic language.
