Music Releases for Friday 2/1
Gallipoli [LP]
$24.98  22.48

Gallipoli, Beirut’s fifth album, started life when Zach Condon returned to his old Farfisa organ, the same one he used to write his first two albums, Gulag Orkestar (2006) and The Flying Club Cup (2007). After stints writing and recording in both New York and Berlin, with time for Zach to recover from a broken arm factored in, band plus producer Gabe Wax (Speedy Ortiz, Soccer Mommy, Adrianne Lenker / Big Thief) headed to Puglia in Italy to finish the album. With the remote rural setting “the right amount of isolated”, an intense month of 12 to 16-hour days in the studio with day trips around the coastline followed. Inspired by the surroundings, Gallipoli is unintentionally more visceral than Beirut’s more recent albums, alive with an energy that is further enhanced by every creak and groan of their instruments, every detuned note, and all amp buzz and technical malfunction being left in the cracks of the songs.

Stuffed & Ready [Opaque Red LP]
$20.98  18.88

Opaque Red Vinyl. After releasing 2016's critically acclaimed Apocalipstick, Cherry Glazerr spent the next 18 months touring the world on their own steam. While furiously building the band's sound and ideas, front person Clem Creevy enlisted Carlos de La Garza to be the band's studio co-collaborator as they evolved the songs and refined the recordings.

Tides of a Teardrop (First Edition) [2LP]
$26.98  24.28

2LP w/ DL, bonus EP with 4 traditional covers, blue vinyl, insert

Anchored by poignant songwriting and their intimate live shows, Mandolin Orange (Andrew Marlin and Emily Frantz) has quietly and confidently found their audience. On February 1, they will release a new album, Tides of a Teardrop, through Yep Roc Records. Thematically this album is a release for Andrew Marlin, the group's songwriter. He lost his mother at a younger age, and although that has impacted his writing in the past, this collection of songs is thematically about letting go and finding peace. Marlin and Frantz were joined by their touring band and for the first time, took more than a few quick days between tour, to record the album. That level of comfort shines through in the band's most accomplished set of songs to date.

Zeppelin Over China
$29.98  26.98
Five [LP]
$24.98  22.48

Five, the new album from White Lies, sees the West-London trio scaling new creative heights with re-energized confidence. As the band explains: ''This is a mile stone record for White Lies. It marks our decade as a band, which has pushed us to expand our sound and reach new territory artistically - it marks the start of a new and exciting chapter for us'' The writing and recording process took in both sides of the Atlantic including a creative sojourn to Los Angeles where they worked on new material with old acquaintance Ed Buller - producer of two previous White Lies albums including the band's chart-topping debut To Lose My Life and third release Big TV. More complex and bolder than its four predecessors with the addition of personal and-at-times intimate lyrics of bassist and primary songwriter Charles Cave, Five provides a confident stride forward.

Catpaws [LP]
$19.98  17.98

Every song that Aaron Sinclair writes has a certain underlying feeling. SPIN described it as 'twitchy paranoia.' Baeble Music sensed a 'strung-out urgency' in his voice, while the Austin Chronicle called his music 'tension-driven' with 'tight, rough riffs and sharp post-punk lines.' This is definitely apparent on A Sinclair's newest release 'Catpaws' our Feb 1st on Nine Mile Records. 'Catpaws' widens Sinclair's songwriting focus and brings a new level of focused energy to song craft and the most intensely rocking album of their career.

Don't Feed The Pop Monster [LP]
$19.98  17.98
Lotus [LP]
$26.98  24.28

SOEN TO RELEASE THEIR FOURTH ALBUM, LOTUS, IN FEBRUARY 2019 Swedish-based progressive metal group Soen will purge themselves of their 4th album -Lotus- on February 1st 2019. Featuring nine pieces, Lotus is the latest in a line of aural therapies from the band, questioning much of today’s darkness as juxtaposed with moments of great escape and hope. The lotus flower has always been a symbol of the purity rising from muddy uncertainties, and with songs such as “Covenant”, “Rival”, “Martyrs” and the title cut all expressing perspectives of life’s darker moments, it was a natural title for this latest project. Produced by David Castillo and Iñaki Marconi at Ghostward Studios and Studio 6 between July and October 2018, the centre-point of the album remains those trademark, snap-heavy, progressive Soen riffs, while overall Lotus promises an exciting new chapter of skin-shedding, soul-searching journeys for all who dare to commit to the ride.

First Body [LP]
$18.98  17.08

Two People. That’s it. No gimmicks, no irony. A name that reflects a lack of artifice in the music and vision of the people behind it: Phoebe Lou & Joey Clough, kindred musical spirits since they were 15. The improvisational element of the Melbourne duo’s album First Body gives it an unpredictable edge. This is electronic music made by humans. If there’s a lack of polish, it’s intentional, and their 1st single ‘I’m Tied, To You’ makes that clear. Available on vinyl 2/1 via Terrible Records.

Ripe For Anarchy [LP]
$16.98  15.28

Corey Cunningham's Business of Dreams is all about emotional catharsis. When his father passed away a few years ago, Cunningham took leave from his long-running Bay Area/LA musical partnerships Magic Bullets and Terry Malts to return to his home state of Tennessee to grieve and confront his past. Making music to cope with this loss resulted in Business of Dreams' lovely eponymous debut album, an unexpected pop pleasure that wound up on Bandcamp's and Raven Sings The Blues' year-end lists for 2017. Soon the live version of Business Of Dreams took shape as Cunningham opened for Rogue Wave on a national tour and played scores of local shows with Frankie Rose, Real Estate and many others. With his new album 'Ripe For Anarchy,' Cunningham has honed the songwriting with an eye towards regret, existence, and perseverance. 'When I'm gone you won't cry for me, focus on the moment, be free,' he sings on 'Chasing That Feeling.' And that's the mantra here: it's time to let go. "The album is about living in the moment, shedding neurosis, and the desire to discard the general societal malaise we've been roped into.' 'Ripe For Anarchy' is a through-and-through ode to indie pop, in the historic definition of the genre. 'My Old Town' and 'N.R.E.A.M.' could be album cuts on a Grant McLennan solo album, 'Don't Let Our Time Expire' and 'Naive Scenes' could be The Smiths, the Sparklehorse cover "The Hatchet Song' bears an uncanny resemblance to Australian pop pioneers Even As We Speak, and "I Feel Dread' has the unmistakable earmarks of The Field Mice. And while he may be more noted for playing guitar in Terry Malts, Smokescreens, and Merge Records' Mike Krol's backing band, Cunningham is most at home making soft sounds extolling the wounded and mournful. 'I think music is the most personal of mediums. You can work and listen, you can run and listen, you can drive and listen. And I think I'm a misfit. If I can make the most personal music for misfits, then I'm satisfied.'

Live In Hollywood [LP]
$21.98  19.78

LIVE IN HOLLYWOOD features amazing performances from a concert that Ronstadt recorded in 1980 for her acclaimed HBO television special. Recorded on April 24, 1980 at Television Center Studios in Hollywood, and produced by John Boylan, the concert captures Ronstadt at the peak of her reign as America’s most popular female rock singer. For LIVE IN HOLLYWOOD, Ronstadt selected 12 of her favorite performances from the original concert.

In concert, she was joined by an outstanding band that included guitarists Kenny Edwards and Danny Kortchmar, drummer Russ Kunkel, bassist Bob Glaub, keyboardist Billy Payne (of Little Feat fame), pedal steel guitarist Dan Dugmore, and backing vocalist Wendy Waldman. Rounding out the band was Peter Asher – Ronstadt’s producer and the concert’s executive producer – who played percussion and sang background.

On stage, Ronstadt held the packed audience spellbound with powerful renditions of her biggest hits – “Blue Bayou,” “Poor Poor Pitiful Me” and “It’s So Easy” – plus an incredible, previously unreleased six-minute jam of her #1 smash, “You’re No Good.” The concert also showcased a trio of Top Ten hits from Ronstadt’s then-current album – Mad Love – with performances of “I Can’t Let Go,” “How Do I Make You” and “Hurt So Bad.” After its release in February 1980, Mad Love would become Ronstadt’s seventh consecutive platinum-selling album.

Million Miles [Vinyl Single]
$9.98  8.98

The Diamond Street Players, Atlanta, GA's modern equivalent of Stax, Motown, or Fame Studio's legendary in-house studio bands, follow up last year's mesmerizing "Living In Harmony" with two distinctive 7" sides, melding two different vibes of this versatile group of true soul/funk purveyors.Led by organist, writer and producer, Spencer Garn, The Diamond Street Players focus first on laying down gritty soul, funk and R&B tracks that more than hold their own instrumentally. Occasionally a track works out well for a lead vocalist, as is the case with the A-Side Million Miles, a smooth and soulful mid-tempo love-soul bender that brings forth remeniscenses of Al Green and Shuggie Otis. This cut features a collaboration with Amanda Joy, whos love for soul and gospel began at age 5 singing in church. A top graduate of the performing arts school she attended, she brings a powerfully soulful voice to the Diamond Street funk. The B-Side is quite another side, indeed, displaying one of those aforementioned "other vibes" of The Diamond Street Players. This edgy, raw and funky "Murky Retrograde" has already received dance floor approval from b-boys and b-girls nationwide--with early floor-filling spins from ATL to Portland, Oregon. But don't worry, it's not just this one side. You'll get a lot more from where that came from on DSP's upcoming spring 2019 full-length groove dish

Heartbreak [LP]
$23.98  21.58

Unloved is the trio of vocalist Jade Vincent, Keefus Ciancia (known for his collaborations with T-Bone Burnett, including the soundtrack to True Detective, and his unprecedented project with Jeff Bridges, Sleeping Tapes) and David Holmes (one of the world's most innovative DJs turned composer whose work includes Steven Soderberg's Ocean's Trilogy). Sharing a love for 60s' girl groups, French pop and film noir soundtracks, they have a sound at once hauled out of the silty depths of the past, and simultaneously wholly modern. Vincent's sublime voice and lyrics, possess an aching, rich-smoked tone of loss and love. Unloved's second full length record Heartbreak, was emboldened by its predecessor to be more emotionally exposed, more musically, lyrically, and vocally audacious. To enter the world of Unloved is to surrender oneself to a great musical immersion, where thoughts soften, ideas mingle with twisted mancini-esque orchestrations and music binds the dawn and dark.

Helium [LP]
$18.98  17.08

Over his first three albums, Homeshake’s Peter Sagar followed his own idiosyncratic vision, a journey that’s taken him from sturdy guitar-based indie-pop to a bleary-eyed take on lo-fi R&B. Now, with Helium, Sagar is putting down roots in aesthetic territory all his own.

It comes through not only in the gauziness of the production, but also in the vulnerability of the songs themselves. Everyone Sagar encounters here — including himself — seems to be a step removed from present reality, whether by technology (“Anything At All”), solitude (“Just Like My”), or sweet fantasy (“Like Mariah”). The record is stitched together by a series of instrumental interludes, synthesizer explorations whose haziness adds to the suspicion that this is all an uncanny dream.

Where his previous three records were recorded directly to one-inch tape in a local studio, Helium was recorded and mixed by Sagar alone in his apartment in Montreal in early 2018. Freed of the rigid editing process he’d endured before, he was able to lose himself in pursuit of tone and texture. A budding interest in ambient and experimental music pushed him to tinker with the micro-sounds that surround the songs here. It’s a far cry from the chorus-laden guitars of his earlier work. “Ever since I started introducing synthesizers into my music, I’ve gotten more interested in texture,” he says. “I’d hit a creative dead end [with guitars], so synths took over.” The warm chords of a Roland Juno 60 form the album’s base, and gave him a clean palette with which to work. “No tape hiss, no humming power outlets and shitty mixing boards,” as he puts it. “Everything just came out nice and pure.”

Their sixth album is the band's most definitive work to date, full of catchy hooks, rousing riffs, sweeping melodies, and thick textured harmonies. It's diverse and emotional,' Daniel Hunt adds. 'It's a lot heavier than our last album, Gravity the Seducer, which was an intentionally more sedate, ethereal record.' Berkeley's On Fire [LP]
$19.98  17.98

Determined to create something new within the rock genre, SWMRS collaborated with envelope-pushing producer Rich Costey (MUSE, Death Cab for Cutie) for two months in the Spring of 2018 for an exercise in grand experimentation. Inspired in equal parts by The Breeders, Rage Against The Machine, and De La Soul, the sonic diversity of the album is indicative of a generation reared on streaming services. SWMRS make music the way they consume it, jumping easily from pop rock to breakbeat-infused rock to emo punk, and jangly power pop. "When we were writing these songs we were very conscious of our role in creating a space for people to escape from the nonstop negative media cycle," shared co-frontman Cole Becker on the album's lyrical content. "It's a strange time to be young; our generation knows the duality of feeling like an unstoppable force for change in one moment and a powerless wreck in the next. We wanted these songs to document that feeling that we've observed closely in ourselves and in the people we've shared our music with over the past three years."

Never Let Me Down: 2018 Remastered Version [LP]
$21.98  19.78

A new production of the 1987 album. The seeds of this new reimagining of the albums were first sown in 2008 when David asked Mario McNulty to remix the track ‘Time Will Crawl’ and record new drums by longtime Bowie drummer, Sterling Campbell along with strings. The track was issued on the iSelect compilation to much acclaim, and in the notes, for that record, David remarked ‘Oh, to redo the rest of that album’.

Fast-forward to early 2018 McNulty entered Electric Lady Studios in New York with Sterling, Tim Lefebvre on bass, who was in the ★ (“Blackstar") band and Reeves Gabrels and David Torn on guitars. All of the musicians had a history with David, so were a perfect fit for what now sound like brand new songs. Nico Muhly, whom Mario first met when they were both interns working for Philip Glass in 2001, has handled the string arrangements.

Cast [LP]
$18.98  17.08

Sometime in 2016, just as the Polish singer and producer Tobiasz Biliński began to find success through the dim and fractured electropop of Coldair, he knew it was time for a radical change. The songs on The Provider, Coldair’s much-lauded second album, had been an exorcism of sorts. Laced with songs about early death, chronic disappointment, and clouded minds, the record was, as he puts it now, his earnest attempt to “get all this old shit out.” That mission accomplished, he needed something new, a restart—the unabashedly radiant and unapologetically complex pop of Perfect Son, delivered in 10 perfect shots on Biliński’s Sub Pop debut, Cast. In the past, Biliński’s music has flirted with and explored the darkness, first in a sort of Transatlantic freak-folk and then with the gothic refractions of Coldair. But on Cast, Perfect Son steps boldly into the light without sloughing off emotional weight or depth. With powerful, sweeping production that recalls the best pop beats of Matthew Dear and arcing melodies that conjure the majesty of Shearwater, Perfect Son animates sensations of lust, belonging, and newfound trust with tumescent electronic arrangements that threaten the safety of any sound system. Biliński sings about falls throughout Cast, but also about picking yourself back up, about pressing on despite or perhaps because of the bruises. In the process, he is lifted by music that feels unabashedly motivational, built to remind us that the best times are hopefully to come. Perfect Son, it should be said, is Sub Pop’s first Polish artist, the result of an extended interest in Biliński’s work and the country itself from label co-founder Jonathan Poneman. Several years ago, Biliński applied to play at South by Southwest as Coldair. Poneman saw his performance, and was impressed. The two stayed in touch, with Poneman eventually signing Coldair to a publishing deal. “I bugged him about releasing my stuff constantly,” Biliński admits with a laugh. “And I guess he admired my persistence.” When Cast was finally finished, Poneman didn’t need more convincing. These songs, after all, are magnetic, with the searching harmonies and deep drums of “Promises” and the rhythmic intricacy and serial synths of “Wax” pulling you close on first listen and holding you there for the foreseeable future. These songs and this story are about the power of human perseverance and deliberate reinvention, of knowing that you can confront and come to terms with the darkest angels of your being. Cast is a testament to the possibilities of the future, brilliantly disguised as 10 grandiose and undeniable pop anthems.

Thank U, Next
$13.99  12.59

Ariana Grande returns with her fifth studio album Thank U, Next. Following the release of her previous studio album Sweetener (2018), Grande began working on a new album in October of the same year, enlisting writers and producers such as Tommy Brown, Max Martin, Ilya Salmanzadeh and Andrew "Pop" Wansel. The album was created in the midst of personal matters, including the death of her ex-boyfriend Mac Miller and breaking up with fiancé Pete Davidson.

Quiet Signs [LP]
$18.98  17.08

Jessica Pratt is not a loud performer. She does not have to be. In a club of a few hundred, even the bar staff are known to go quiet while she's on stage. Her third album, Quiet Signs, feels like a distillation of this power. The album leads off with "Opening Night," a nod to Gena Rowlands' harrowing, brilliant performance in the John Cassavetes film of the same name. It’s also an emblem of where this spare, mysterious collection of songs falls in the course of Pratt’s career.

"On some level I considered an audience while making the last record (2015's On Your Own Love Again)," she writes, "But my creative world was still very private then and I analyzed the process less. This was the first time I approached writing with the idea of a cohesive record in mind."

After a collection of demos and early studio recordings (Jessica Pratt, Birth Records, 2012) earned her a small, dedicated audience, Pratt moved from San Francisco to Los Angeles and recorded her first intentional album in her bedroom in a matter of months. That album, On Your Own Love Again (Drag City, 2015), would bring her around the world many times, leading many to fall under the spell of Jessica Pratt the performer, the songwriter, the singer with the heavy-lidded voice that feels alien and familiar at the same time.

Her first album fully recorded in a professional studio setting, Quiet Signs finds Pratt's songwriting and accompanying guitar work refined -- more distinct and direct. Songs like "Fare Thee Well" and "Poly Blue" retain glimmers of OYOLA's hazy day afternoon spells, yet delicate flute, strings sustained by organ arrangements, and rehearsal room piano now gesture towards the lush chamber pop and longing of The Left Banke. On the album’s first single, "This Time Around," Pratt hits on a profound, late-night clarity over just a couple of deep chords, evoking Caetano Veloso's casual seaside brilliance. And before the curtain drops on Quiet Signs, Pratt provides a show-stopping closer, "Aeroplane."

In the world of Quiet Signs, the black of night usually represents fear, despair, resignation; finally at home descending towards the illuminated city, she sings over black leather drone and tambourine shuffle with a newfound resolve. Quiet Signs is the journey of an artist emerging from the darkened wings, growing comfortable as a solitary figure on a sprawling stage.

The album was written in Los Angeles and recorded at Gary's Electric in Brooklyn, NY over 2017 and 2018. It was co-produced by Al Carlson. He plays flute, organ and piano on some songs. Matt McDermott also played piano and string synthesizer. It will be released on Mexican Summer on February 8, 2019.

Sunshine Rock [LP]
$19.98  17.98

Single LP on black vinyl with euro sleeve. Includes coupon for full download

The cliché that circulated after the 2016 election foretold a new artistic golden age: Artists would transform their anger and anxiety into era-defining works of dissent in the face of authoritarianism.

Yet Bob Mould calls his new album Sunshine Rock.

It’s not because Mould—whose face belongs on the Mount Rushmore of alternative music—likes the current administration. His decision to “write to the sunshine,” as he describes it, comes from a more personal place—a place found in Berlin, Germany, where he’s spent the majority of the last three years. Here Mould would draw inspiration from the new environments.

Buoys [LP]
$21.98  19.78

The sixth album from Animal Collective founding member Noah Lennox (aka Panda Bear), Buoys, was co-produced and co-mixed by collaborator Rusty Santos in Lennox’s adopted home of Lisbon, Portugal. The album features Lennox’s bright, sincere voice along with his beatific approach to melodic structure and vocal phrasing, with miles of space surrounding it, a guitar and a few textured samples fleshing out the dubby sparseness and undercurrent of speaker-limit-pushing sub-bass low-end. Animated by their ongoing interest in contemporary music production techniques, Buoys retains a deep layer of experimentation coursing through its hyper-modern production – a hallmark of Panda Bear releases that will feel intimately familiar to fans of Lennox’s decade-plus body of work.

Live In London [LP]
$21.98  19.78

Mavis Staples has been a soul and gospel music legend for more than 50 years. Her work fronting the legendary Staples Singers defined the sound of politically-committed soul and influenced generations of musicians. As a solo artist in her own right, she has helped to define much of what is righteous and soulful in American music. There are few people who can claim to have been performing as long as Mavis Staples, let alone to her standards. This album captures her live at the Union Chapel in London with her band performing some of the greatest songs from her musical catalog, while celebrating her 79th birthday.

Tip Of The Sphere [LP]
$24.98  22.48

Over the past decade, Cass McCombs has established himself as one of our premier songwriters. It’s a ca- reer that’s twisted and turned, from style to subject, both between records and within them. McCombs has never made two albums that sound the same. His new one, Tip of the Sphere, is particularly unique. Tip of the Sphere is McCombs’ 9th studio album and while many of his records have been comprised of songs recorded in different studios and pieced togeth- er over time, this one was recorded quickly in one lo- cation with a strong sense of purpose, resulting in his most consistent record to date. This approach brings a raw immediacy to his songs, which are some of his best yet as he finds the perfect balance of compassion and experimentation. The rock songs rock harder, the ballads are more beautiful, the experiments more confident; with the sounds of jazz and latin music creeping in through the back window. This is an artist trying to make sense of it all through a relentless, ever searching creative process.

Pursuit Of Momentary Happiness [LP]
$17.98  16.18

Few albums in rock ‘n’ roll history have seen its creator’s obsession veer so close to self-destruction, as Yak’s The Pursuit Of Momentary Happiness. For singer, guitarist and driving force Oli Burslem, making his band’s second album became about pursuing his artistic vision at the expense of all else, including his own financial security, and mental health. Who else these days invests every single penny available to them into recording, to the point where they become homeless? If you’ve ever asked yourself, “Where have all the guitar rockstars gone?,” we have an answer: they are sleeping in the back of an old Citroën in a London alleyway awaiting the release of their hard-earned masterpiece.

Listening to The Pursuit Of Momentary Happiness, you frequently feel the white-knuckle monomania of Yak’s mission. It’s one of those once-in-a-decade records, whose sheer sense of belief and commitment pulsates through every nanosecond of boundary-breaking sound – like Spiritualized’s Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space, and Tame Impala’s Innerspeaker, both of whose creators had a part to play in its genesis.

Guitar music is alive and well on The Pursuit of Momentary Happiness, and with Yak on the scene, we expect it’s not going anywhere.

Already Ready Already [LP]
$19.98  17.98

For over 20 years, Ben Ellman, Robert Mercurio, Stanton Moore, Jeff Raines, and Rich Vogel have been exploring the seemingly limitless musical possibilities born out of their work together as Galactic. Over those years, the seminal New Orleans band has consistently pushed artistic boundaries on the road and in the studio, approaching their music with open ears and drawing on inspiration as much from the sounds bubbling up from their city's streets as they do from each other.

Mujeres [LP]
$19.98  17.98

Y La Bamba has been many things, but at the heart of it is singer-songwriter Luz Elena Mendoza’s inquisitive sense of self. Their fifth record, Mujeres, carries on the Portland-based band’s affinity for spiritual contemplation, but goes a step further in telling a story with a full emotional spectrum. Coming off Ojos Del Sol, one of NPR’s Top 50 Albums of 2016, Mujeres exhibits the scope of Mendoza’s artistic voice like never before. “Soy como soy,” Mendoza says, and that declaration is the bold— even political— statement that positions Mujeres to be Y La Bamba’s most unbridled offering yet. Mendoza forges new narratives from old stories of heritage and family, tracing history while forging modern chicana feminism. The raw honesty of Mujeres is in fact the raw honesty of Mendoza. Armed with the emotionality of traditional música mexicana and the storytelling of American folk, Y La Bamba’s artistry is not just their musical ability but Mendoza’s search for unadulterated truth. It is in an ancestral journey in which Mendoza comes to terms with the influence and limitations of her upbringing. While there is a celebration of the Mexican creativity that has informed Mendoza’s life, there is a darker side to reconcile with. Where do mujeres fit in to the American story? What are the sins for which we are all guilty? How do different generations interact with the world? How can a culture become visible without being tokenized? It is no surprise that in Mujeres, Y La Bamba’s first record with Mendoza at the helm of production, Mendoza contemplates these questions to tell her story. But it is not just Mendoza’s story. Challenging a narrative and dealing with the emotionality of that effort— that is everyone’s story. Mujeres was recorded by Luz Elena Mendoza and Ryan Oxford at Color Therapy Studios and Besitos Fritos Studios in Portland, Oregon. Mixed by Jeff Bond, with Grace Bugbee on bass, John Niekrasz on drums, Margaret Wher Gibson on keys, and Ed Rodriguez and Ryan Oxford on electric guitar.

From Memphis To New Orleans [LP]

Some know Alex Chilton as the lead singer of the Boxtops who had a number one hit in 1967 with “The Letter,” others know him from the majestic Beatlesque pop of Big Star or as the name in a song by the Replacements (“Children by the millions sing of Alex Chilton…”) Others know him as the songwriter of the theme song for That 70s Show. He was at the height of his cult star fame in the mid 1980s when he made these recordings. It is some of his best most honest work oddly neglected for some time but delivered here for enthusiasts and neophytes alike. Includes B-A-B-Y, Guantanaamerika, Let Me Get Close to You and many more.

Give Up Your Ghosts [LP]
$20.98  18.88

INSIGHTFUL SONGWRITER, KERRVILLE NEW FOLK WINNER THE VOICE (NBC) ALUM REBECCA LOEBE SIGNS WITH BLUE CORN MUSIC FOR HER 5TH ALBUM 'GIVE UP YOUR GHOSTS,' OUT FEB. 8 FIRST SINGLE "GHOSTS" video premiering on Billboard first of December "I love listening to you sing, in a genuine way." - Adam Levine (of Maroon 5) "She wraps her rich, honeyed voice around a mix of nuanced Americana and pop numbers."- The Chicago Tribune "Loebe's voice is breathtakingly beautiful, delightful and superb."- Huffington Post Though she appeared on the Voice in 2011 and was courted by Adam Levine and Christina Aguilera (eventually joining team Adam), Loebe has built her reputation through road-dogging, one show and one fan at a time. It's resulted in over 50,000 fans on social media; support slots for The Civil Wars, Mary Chapin Carpenter, and Gregory Alan Isakov; airplay on over 600 stations for her previous album 'Blink.' 'Give Up Your Ghosts' marks the fifth album and a high-water mark of storytelling and emotional power for the Austinite. Written all in one sitting, the title track "Ghosts" and album opener "Growing Up" serve as mission statements for Loebe. She remembers, "When I was done, I realized that I was singing to myself, reminding myself that other people have been through anything I'm struggling with in the current moment. They've made it to the other side of the mountain, and they're cheering for me to pull through. Not only that, but I can be that for other people." The title of the record comes from the chorus - 'give up all your ghosts, at least the ones you love the most, they're never holding you as close as you are holding them.' "Ghosts" will be released as a single tomorrow. All of the songs were written in a burst of creativity and Loebe says, "I've written albums full of what I needed to say, but this album is full of songs I need to hear." "Growing Up," cowritten with Megan Burtt speaks to rolling with the changes that life throws one's way, especially for women. The emotionally resonant closer

The Bookends [LP]
$21.98  19.78

On 8th February 2019, Eric Gales returns with his brand new album ‘The Bookends’ on Provogue/Mascot Label Group and it features collaborations with B. Slade and Provogue artists Doyle Bramhall II and Beth Hart. The challenge for making ‘The Bookends’ was for Gales to challenge himself. “As a guitar player it’s been established that I can play a little bit, just a little bit,” he smiles. But for this album he not only wanted to push himself as a musician, but also as a vocalist, to build up his vocal discography. Gales’ story is an incredible one, he was a child prodigy and released his debut album The Eric Gales Band in 1991 as a 16 year old on Elektra Records. It was the first of 10 albums on a major label through a blistering career. He has released 15 studio albums in total ahead of ‘The Bookends’ and a host of other collaborations. He has battled drink and drug issues and spent time in jail in 2009 for possession of drugs and a weapon. Gales proudly tells his story every night before every show, now over two years sober he is creating some of the most breath-taking music he has ever made. If his previous album ‘Middle of the Road’ was the rebirth of Eric Gales, then ‘The Bookends’ is him knocking away his boundaries and taking flight on a voyage of self-discovery asking himself what do you think you can do and pushing that into the stratosphere.

Almost Free [LP]
$25.98  23.38

Almost Free, the new release from FIDLAR touches on many of the tragedies and irritations of modern life: existential dread, gentrification, the inescapable sway of the super-rich and the self-involved, post-breakup telecommunication, performative wokeness, the loneliness of sobriety or the lack thereof. But through sheer force of imagination and an unchecked joie de vivre, the L.A.-based band manages to turn feeling wrong into something glorious and essential. In the age of joyless self-care, Almost Free makes a brilliant case for being less careful, for living without fear of fucking up, and possibly embracing any incurred damage as a lucky symptom of being alive. The album sees the band pushing boundaries into new territory and influences while staying true to their unshakable core. "A lot of the vibe was, 'Well, why can't we do that? Why can't we have horns? Why can't we have key changes? Why can't we have a harmonica loop?', said lead singer/guitarist Zac Carper. It was abouttaking the ceiling off. Having it be limitless. Ain't no rules." Elvis added "Almost Free feels like a step forward for us in a lot of ways. We tried to be true to ourselves and let the music come out naturally, without fear of how people would receive it.

It applies to Dave's difficulties in reconciling his domestic and career choices and finds the solution in the very thing that brought him here in the first place -- the music. Combining both acoustic and electric guitars, as well as a longtime fascination with keyboards and electronic music -- which he wasn't able to explore as much as he would've liked in The Killers -- Keuning has created a psychic diary that allows us to connect the dots and learn what brought him to a career crossroads.

Amo [LP]
$27.98  25.18

amo is the long awaited new album Sheffield, England based rock band Bring Me The Horizon. amo is Bring me The Horizon's sixth studio album, and the lead single from this collection is the driving rock song MANTRA. The band spent time writing and recording in Los Angeles, with members Oli Sykes and Jordan Fish handling production. What has transpired is one of their most exhilarating, genre crossing albums to date. Says Bring Me The Horizon frontman Oli Sykes, "amo is a love album that explores every aspect of that most powerful emotion. It deals with the good the bad and the ugly, and as a result we've created an album that's more experimental, more varied, weird, and wonderful than anything we've done before." While amo has some surprises, it very much sticks to the bands successful fan pleasing formula of massive stadium bouncing rocks songs with huge singalong choruses. Bring Me The Horizon have been on a rocket of a journey over the last few years, selling over 4 Million albums globally to date, playing sell out shows in over 40 countries.

Goes West [LP]
$19.98  17.98

From M.C. Taylor:  William s new record, Goes West, is the best music that he s ever made. I m sure of this because I know and love all of his music intimately, and this album moves me the most, and the most consistently. The first time I heard it was in the late spring in the Texas Hill Country, rolling between limestone and scrub. I was on a cleanse then no alcohol, no drugs, no evil thoughts and was astonished at the emotional clarity that the album held. It offered up a model for what I wanted my head to feel like. Goes West marks a sort of narrowing of focus for William s music; it sounds as though he found a way to point himself directly towards the rich and bittersweet emotional center of his music without being distracted by side trips. Perhaps this is down to the fact that William only plays acoustic guitar on the album, a clear and conscious decision considering that he is one of Nashville s great electric guitarists. The band that performs Goes West alongside William including guitarists Meg Duffy and Bill Frisell, bassist and producer Brad Cook, keyboardist James Wallace, drummer Griffin Goldsmith, and engineer Tucker Martine is the best and most sympathetic group of players that William could have assembled to play these songs.

Future Ruins [LP]
$19.98  17.98
Fever [LP]
$19.98  17.98

It's clear from the opening notes of the album's first and title track ''Fever'' that Balthazar have changed, not least due to their individual musical pursuits over the past few years. Opening with a rolling languid bass riff, ''Fever'' unfurls into a slinky sunset jam, a swooping string motif adding drama to the funky bustle that fanfares the five-piece into new territory with their fourth album. Honest, playful and underpinned with a carefree abandon from two extraordinary songwriters, Balthazar has fashioned their most cohesive album to date.

Power Chords [LP]
$19.98  17.98

Power Chords, Mike Krol's new Merge release, picks up where 2015's Turkey left off. It traces Krol's journey back to punk rock, harnessing both the guitar technique and the musical redemption referenced in it's title. He's wielding the same influences-Misfits, The Strokes, early Weezer, Ramones-but turning up the gravity and the gain. Indeed, Krol has gone somewhere new; yes, he bludgeoned himself with over-analysis and self-loathing, but along the way he stumbled upon a trove of intricate guitar lines and artfully mutating melodies. Music ruined Krol's life. And then saved it. In chronicling that process, Krol has made his best record-painful, voyeuristic, and angry, but ultimately transcendent and timeless. It is the sound of Krol giving in to a force greater than himself, as though the chords are playing him rather than the other way around.

Music To Draw To: Io [2LP]
$34.98  31.48
The Goat [LP]
$29.98  26.98

"Puppy’s anticipated debut album is a fusion of mighty riffs, infectious melodies and genre-bustin’ ambition. In short, it’s like nothing else. Since releasing their ‘Vol II’ EP in 2017, this London-based trio have been climbing the ranks of rock royalty; they’ve featured on ‘Guitar Hero’ and they’ve appeared at a host of major festivals, including Glastonbury, picking up heavy praise (The Guardian, Radio One, etc.) along the way… All of which has paved the way for ‘The Goat’ – 12 tracks that successfully combine the left-field melodic turns of Weezer, the hazy fuzz of Smashing Pumpkins and the straight-to-the bone sonics of the Big Four of Thrash, the end result being a signature sound that hides a bloody, occult-esque heart beneath its festival-ready choruses. With eight of the album’s 12 tracks produced by Neil Kennedy (Creeper, Boston Manor) and the remaining four by Tom Dalgety (Royal Blood, Ghost), ‘The Goat’ is a record that’ll inspire grins from even the most grizzled of metalheads and headbanging from the most hesitant of indie kids, dodging convention and pretension at every turn in favour of a fun-first approach. With video tracks ‘Black Hole’, ‘Demons’ & ‘Entombed’ all proudly featured, the latter pair in emboldened guise, ‘The Goat’ will be one of 2019’s finest guitar albums from one of the country’s most entrancing new bands. "

After The News
$14.98  13.48

On her captivating solo debut, After The News, Addi McDaniel points her search inwards, channeling the pain of loss and regret into a transformative work of beauty and strength. Hailed as "a dynamo with a brass-plated voice" by the LA Times, McDaniel is both an extraordinary singer and a gifted interpreter of song, and After The News finds her breathing vivid life into a raft of original songs from collaborator Tom Siering, whose material she deftly pairs with covers of tracks by Andrew Bird and Bruce Cockburn. Backed by an all-star cast of musicians including drummer/producer Marco Giovino (Robert Plant, Norah Jones), McDaniel blurs the lines between roots, blues, soul, and jazz on the album, inhabiting each track with the range and empathy of an actor taking on a role.  Smoky and sincere, gentle in it's insistence, her voice conveys a daring intimacy that feels tailor-made for Siering's candidly honest reflections on sorrow and regret, hope and forgiveness, pain and transcendence.

Another Music In A Different Kitchen [LP]
$22.98  20.68
Love Bites [LP]
$22.98  20.68

To mark the 40th anniversary of the original releases, Domino are very proud to announce details of the re-issue of Buzzcocks seminal first two albums, Another Music In A Different Kitchen and Love Bites. The albums follow the Domino re-releases of their debut EP, Spiral Scratch and Time’s Up, a collection of demos, from 1976. Famously taking their name from ‘It’s the buzz, cock’, a headline from a Time Out review of 1970s TV music drama ‘Rock Follies’, Buzzcocks formed in Bolton in 1976 by Pete Shelley and Howard Devoto, who have a strong claim to have kick-started a musical revolution in Manchester having organised and played at the now infamous Sex Pistols show at Manchester’s Lesser Free Trade Hall in 1976, a show which inspired and spawned the likes of Joy Division, The Fall and The Smiths. Having recorded their debut EP, Spiral Scratch, in October 1976 for a cost of £45 (the single would go on to sell 16,000 copies in the first six months of release on their own New Hormones label), the band soon under-went personnel changes with founder Howard Devoto leaving before they signed to United Artists and embarked on the recording of their debut album. Recorded at Olympic Studios in London between December 1977 and January 1978 with producer Martin Rushent and featuring the line-up of Pete Shelley (vocals / guitar), Steve Diggle (guitar / vocals), Steve Garvey (bass) and John Maher (drums), Another Music In A Different Kitchen was released in March 1978 featuring a distinctive cover by Malcolm Garrett whose work would become inextricably linked with the band. Within six months of their debut album release, the band had recorded and released its follow up. Again working with Martin Rushent at Olympic Studios, Love Bites was recorded in late July 1978 and released in September of that year. It featured their highest charting single, and arguably best-known song, Ever Fallen In Love (With Someone You Shouldn’t’ve). By the end of 1978 with the release of these albums not only had Buzzcocks established themselves as one of the leading-lights of punk but proved themselves as deft songwriters capable of producing three-minute-mini-masterpieces that would endure long after the initial spark of punk had faded. After releasing a third album, A Different Kind Of Tension, in 1979 the band continued for a couple of years before finally disbanding in 1981. The band would re-form in 1989 for a number of shows and they have continued to play live and record albums since featuring original members Pete Shelley and Steve Diggle. Seminal release from British punk pioneers, lovingly restored and re-mastered from the original ¼ tapes Packaged in the original Malcolm Garrett designed sleeves with lavish 8-page booklets containing unseen images and extensive liner notes by famed writer, broadcaster, music journalist and punk rock commentator Jon Savage LP comes housed in embossed jacket with glossy 8-page booklet

Rehab Doll: Deluxe Edition [LP]
$24.98  22.48

The story of Seattle's rise to global rock supremacy in the late '80s and early '90s begins with Green River. Made up of Jeff Ament (bass), Mark Arm (guitar/vocals), Bruce Fairweather (guitar), Stone Gossard (guitar), and Alex Shumway (drums), the quintet put out three 12”s and a 7” single during its brief existence. Green River's influence on Seattle's music scene spread far and wide thanks to the members' dispersion into bands including Pearl Jam, Mudhoney, and Love Battery, as well as the punk-glam-sludge-rock songs they left behind. "By '83, '84, there was definitely a movement that was happening within hardcore, like Black Flag slowing down for My War," says Arm. "The Replacements and Butthole Surfers were rearing their heads, and they're very different bands, but they're not hardcore—the Replacements are pretty much straight-up rock, and Butthole Surfers were God knows what. Sonic Youth's Bad Moon Rising was around, and a lot of really interesting post-hardcore things were happening." Green River, which formed in 1984, was part of that evolution, with a sound that straddled a lot of different genres—blues, punk, bloozy straight-ahead rock. The mini-LP Dry As A Bone, which came out in 1987, and the band's lone full-length Rehab Doll, which came out in 1988, were released as a single CD with a few bonus cuts, including their sneering cover of David Bowie's "Queen Bitch" and their marauding version of Dead Boys' "Ain't Nothin' to Do," in 1990—but they've been unavailable on vinyl for years. Now, these slices of Seattle music history are not only back in print, they're accompanied by items from the vaults that had been forgotten about for decades. Dry As A Bone was recorded at Jack Endino's Reciprocal Recording in 1986, and it shows the band in furious form, with Arm's yowl battling Fairweather and Gossard's ferocious guitar playing on "This Town" and "Unwind" opening as a slow bluesy grind then jump-starting itself into a hyperactive chase. The deluxe edition includes Green River's cuts from the crucial Seattle-scene compilation Deep Six, as well as long-lost songs that were recorded to the now-archaic format Betamax. Rehab Doll, recorded largely at Seattle's Steve Lawson Studios., bridges the gap between the taut, punky energy of Dry As a Bone and the bigger drums and thicker riffs that were coming to dominate rock in the late '80s. This new edition of Rehab Doll includes a version of “Swallow My Pride” recorded to 8-track at Endino's Reciprocal Recording, which features a more accurate depiction of how the band sounded when they played live. "When I listen to these mixes, I think, 'This is how we actually sounded—this is the kind of energy we had,'" says Shumway. Green River's place in American music history is without question, but these recordings paint a more complete picture of the band—and of rock in the mid- to late-'80s, when punk's faster-and-louder ideals had begun shape-shifting into other ideas.

The Capitalist Blues [LP]
$19.98  17.98

Inspired by the divided sociopolitical climate in the United States, Leyla's McCalla's album The Capitalist Blues explores the psychological and emotional effects of living in a society where money is king, and the poor are left to fend for themselves. Despite the pessimism and cynicism the album's title evokes, these songs focus on recognizing that while we may feel overwhelmed by the injustice happening around us, we must always resist the temptation to be overcome by it. The Capitalist Blues is a clear musical departure from the folk approach of McCalla's first two critically-acclaimed albums. Comprising mostly original songs and increasingly steeped in the music of her adopted home of New Orleans and her ancestral home of Haiti, McCalla's songs span the musical spectrum from New Orleans traditional jazz to Zydeco to Haitian Rara.

What Will We Do [LP]
$19.98  17.98

On What Will We Do, Lula Wiles channel infectious energy and bold insight into music that strikes with purpose. The band fosters contradiction, embracing the spirit of traditional American music, yet unflinchingly calling into question the virtues of the culture that produces it— country songs that shine a light on a country’s crimes; love songs about being alone; murder ballads that challenge the standards of morality. Lula Wiles exist in the tense space where tradition and revolution meet, from which their harmonies rise into the air to create new American music.

Blue Stage Session [LP]
$14.98  13.48

The Third Man Records Cass Corridor space in Detroit had the distinct pleasure of hosting and recording one of the most compelling new guitarists of the 21st century, Mdou Moctar. Mdou is a member of the Tuareg music community gestating in the remote desert city of Agadez, Niger, 'where guitars are king.' His music fi rst came to the attention of Western music-lovers through the essential fi eld recording work being done by the good folks at Sahel Sounds, first on their 2010 compilation Music From Saharan Cellphones. While much of Tuareg music has become more distorted, faster and bombastic as of late, Mdou's soundscapes are more traditionally sparse, polyrhythmic and deeply psychedelic, with lyrics sung in the style of Tuareg nomadic poets. His show on the Blue Stage at Third Man Records Cass Corridor was proof of how special all of this feels, especially in front of a Western audience, most of whom were seeing Mdou live for the fi rst time. When Mdou took the stage with guitarist Ahmoudou Madassane and drummer Mahmoud Ahmed Jabra - only their faces exposed in their tunics and turbans - and began to play, there was a meditative intrigue that loomed heavy and thick in the room. Though hard to see clearly Mdou's precise and rapid-fi re fi ngerwork on his Fender, the audience was quickly and thoroughly transfi xed by his left-handed virtuosity. By the end of the psychedelic-guitar-rock-groove-explosion that was their set, it was clear that this was a show that would be talked about for a very long time. LP packaging: Direct-to-board LP jacket, standard weight vinyl Recorded live to tape on 9.15.17 at Third Man Records in Detroit. TRACK LISTING A1. Tarha A2. Kamane Tarhanine A3. Ibitilan A4. Survivor Blues [LP]
$24.98  22.48

On January 25, 2019, Walter Trout will release his new album "Survivor Blues" on the Provogue label. Walter Trout is no ordinary artist. Survivor Blues is no ordinary covers album. From the day he conceived the project to the moment he counted off the first song in the studio, Walter Trout had a bolder plan for Survivor Blues. "I'm riding in my car sometimes," says the US blues titan. "I've got a blues station on – and here's another band doing Got My Mojo Workin'. And there's a little voice in me that says, 'Does the world need another version of that song?' So I came up with an idea. I didn't want to do Stormy Monday or Messin' With The Kid. I didn't want to do the blues greatest hits. I wanted to do old, obscure songs that have hardly been covered. And that's how Survivor Blues started..."

UK artist RAT BOY has teamed up with Tim Armstrong to produce his new album titled ‘INTERNATIONALLY UNKNOWN’, being released in North America via Armstrong’s Hellcat Records label. RAT BOY first found Armstrong’s punk/hip-hop band The Transplants in his father’s record collection, and subsequently delved into his back catalogue with Rancid and Operation Ivy. RAT BOY had repeatedly mentioned his admiration of Armstrong in interviews, which led to the L.A. punk veteran discovering the young Essex upstart. RAT BOY and Armstrong immediately connected through a shared love for mixing the visceral energy of punk with hip-hop beats. In many ways, it’s hardly surprising: both musicians share similar influences and often reflect on their upbringing in their lyrics. The pair met in Los Angeles at Armstrong’s Shiprec Studios where the momentum was such that the project was entirely written and recorded during three visits, which amounted to a total of two months’ work. RAT BOY’s live band joined him in Los Angeles, while other collaborators include former Aggrolites bassist J Bonner and The Interrupters’ vocalist Aimee Interrupter. John King of The Dust Brothers (Beastie Boys, Beck) also contributed production. The result is twelve tracks which amplify RAT ROY’s rabble-rousing riot act to a new level. He’s drawing on diverse influences which echo, at various points, The Clash, Beastie Boys, The Prodigy, Rebel MC, Green Day and Run DMC.

In Two (Ogv)
$18.98  17.08
Canterbury Girls [LP]
$22.98  20.68

As for the album, for L+M, Canterbury Girls refers to a real place they know, in Broad Ripple, IN - and for them, as Madeleine explains," it’s the first place of adolescent freedom, the first place of blossoming girlhood - and a place to imagine the future a girl wants,” But the opposite is also at play; when youthful dreams are lost and the kind of emotional baggage that women have to carry, more often than not, becomes their burden. Burdens of disgust, of pain, unwanted attention, and trauma - the double standard, the disappointments, the disrespect, the fury, the helplessness, and the resignation. Sharing the angst bundled baggage and taking refuge in sharing and realizing you aren’t alone… that’s when healing begins. It’s the story of many, and the story of Canterbury Girls everywhere.

Effluxion [LP]
$19.98  17.98

Effluxion, the fifth full length recorded by Michael Benjamin Lerner as Telekinesis, is a back-to-basics album-not just in it's reaffirmation of the sound and style that made Lerner an indie wunderkind a decade ago at age 22, but in the way it was created. Using the same now-discontinued MacBook microphone he used to record his earliest tracks, he holed up in the basement of his West Seattle home and put the album together piece by piece over the past two years, playing every instrument. While previous albums had former Death Cab for Cutie guitarist Chris Walla-who discovered and championed Telekinesis' demos-and Spoon's Jim Eno serving as producers and sounding boards and sidemen and general voices of authority and experience, Lerner wanted to do this one entirely on his own.

Distance Over Time [2LP]
$35.98  32.38

"Distance Over Time" is Dream Theater's 14th studio album and debut for InsideOutMusic/Sony Music. The two-time GRAMMY® Award nominated progressive metal band have sold over 15 million records worldwide. For this record, the band approached things a little differently. For the first time, the members lived, wrote & recorded together at the secluded Yonderbarn studios in Monticello, NY over the course of four months. For "Distance Over time," the band wanted to return to their roots and produce a more organic record. Despite these changes, Dream Theater uphold their unique signature of combining metallic aggression and progressive scope, putting it in a frame of tighter, more concise song writing. "Distance Over Time" might deal with difficult topics, but it also reflects the spirit, joy and passion that Dream Theater put into making this album. "Distance Over Time" is available as Standard CD Jewel Case, Special Edition Digipak (incl. 1 bonus track), 180g Gatefold 2LP Edition (incl. 1 bonus track & an 8-page LP-booklet), Ltd. Edition Artbook (incl. 1 bonus track, 5.1 mix with video animations, instrumental mixes, high res files of the album, stems for "Untethered Angel", extended liner notes, additional artwork incl. photos from the writing session and additional video content), Deluxe Collector's Box Set (incl. lenticular cover card, Artbook, 180g 2 LP Gatefold Edition with exclusive artwork and an exclusive LP color, exclusive picture 7", 60 x 60 cm poster, 10 art cards, slipmat, patch, pin and a hand-numbered certificate of authenticity) and as a Digital Album (incl. 1 bonus track). This version is the Black Gatefold 2LP Edition.

In Real Life (Live At Spacebomb Studios) [Limited Edition LP]
$19.98  17.98

Limited vinyl LP pressing. Eric D. Johnson and Andy Cabic have a lot in common. Two kindred spirits with a common affinity for songwriting that embraces a range of feeling, strong on melodies paired with thoughtful lyrics and catchy hooks. Over the years, they've played in each other's bands (Fruit Bats and Vetiver), on one another's albums, scored films together, and toured the world with one another. In Real Life documents their musical relationship and recent duo touring as part of the ongoing Live At Spacebomb series. The unadorned simplicity of these performances captures a bit of their travels and friendship, their appreciation and respect for each other's songs, and the ease and joy of sharing the stage night after night, year after year. Johnson & Cabic each bring two fan favorites to the table. Two beloved cover songs complete the set: Bobby Charles' classic "I Must Be In A Good Place Now" and the lesser known "Nice Baby and the Angel" by David Blue. With both Fruit Bats and Vetiver ready to begin the next chapter in each of their stories, In Real Life is a time capsule, captured at a moment of synchronicity for the two musicians. They've come from separate places and their paths will part once again, but just for a moment, these two friends find themselves in the same place at the same time.

Mazy Fly [Blue LP]
$21.98  19.78

Mazy Fly, the second full-length by the Bay Area artist SPELLLING, explores the tension between the thrill of exploring the unknown and the terror of imminent destruction. Chrystia Cabral spent the summer of 2018 in her Berkeley studio reflecting on the thresholds of human progress and longing for a new and better tomorrow. She was struck by the way the same technologies that have given humans the ability to achieve utopian dreams of discovery have also brought the world to the precipice of dystopic global devastation. Despite the darkness of this reality, Mazy Fly is defiantly optimistic. It is a celestial voyage into the unknown, piloted by Cabral. Mazy Fly musically traverses the spaces between languid, honey-soaked vocals and distant angelic whispers, from thumping 808 club beats to crunching tape loops, and from silky, smooth R&B to whirling organ sonatas. Cabral became enamored by the idea of flight as a harbinger of both progress and apocalypse, and that was expressed in the textures and compositional techniques she utilized. Swarms, flocks, flies, angels, spaceships, flying saucers - all are represented sonically by Cabral and her Juno-106 synthesizer.

Undone At 31 [LP]
$18.98  17.08

Named for the year in his life when the bottom fell out following a long-term romantic partnership, Martin Frawley sequenced Undone at 31 chronologically to emphasize his journey. Those familiar with his time as co-leader of Melbourne's Twerps will take comfort in hearing his deceptively simple songwriting is still intact, but the big reveal here is how new instrumentation and influences seamlessly expand his playground. It might take several listens for one to realize Frawley is singing "Something About Me" over just violin, Moog, and a Graceland-esque bassline, or to appreciate the PB+J pairing of Fender Rhodes and lap steel on "Where the Heart Is," which serves as Undone at 31's twist ending. Frawley's album does not shy away from morbid musings and raw emotions that come with a breakup, and like Shoot Out the Lights or Sea Change, Undone at 31's tunefulness and exploration combined are what elevate the music above the melancholy subject matter.

$21.98  19.78

Ever Since I Lost My Mind is the third album and Rounder Records debut for SUSTO, the creative musical persona of charismatic frontman Justin Osborne. The album is a resounding triumph: a mix of new partnerships and collaborations with old friends, all anchored by Osborne’s perceptive songs that explore connection, loss, and transience––and the pain and joy each brings. With their rock-rooted sound, SUSTO keeps listeners engaged by refusing to occupy an easily defined space. Produced by Ian Fitchuck (Kacey Musgraves, Ruston Kelly) and featuring key input from Osborne’s longtime creative sounding board Wolfgang Zimmerman, Ever Since I Lost My Mind defiantly experiments with synth embellishments, Latin heart, guileless folk, and more.

An earth shattering, 11 song concept album, “Dreamcatcher” revolves around some of the most intriguing and relatable subject matter of today’s modern society: Horror Stories. Taking influence from the novels and films The Shining, The Dead Zone, It, and the tales of Hannibal, the album is written in such a way where not only do the lyrics reflect these stories, but the music itself represents moments, emotions, and realizations from the characters of these classic tales; something to look forward to for any true metal-head, horror-loving fiend. The album also features guest appearances from Mike Semesky (Intervals, The HAARP Machine), Jamie Hanks (I Declare War), Brian James (Fallujah), Sims Cashion, Leonardo Guzman, and was mixed & mastered by Jamie King (Beneath The Buried and Me, The Contortionist).

Keep On Keepin' On: Curtis Mayfield Studio Albums
$69.98  62.98
Illegal Moves [Blue / Red LP]
$18.98  17.08

New York quartet Sunwatchers drew a line in the sand with their last album "II", a powerful statement of the band's unique brand of spiritual, free-rock, gonzo attitude and a progressive socio-political worldview. "Illegal Moves" is their second album for Trouble In Mind. "Illegal Moves" is the band's most potent blend yet; a heady potion of free-jazz, psychedelia, punk & noise rock that is both tender and ferocious; the perfect soundtrack to smash capitalism and fix our broken system thru sonic catharsis and revolution. Songs like "Everybody Play" and "Beautiful Crystals" insinuate themselves into your brain with the rubbery synchronicity of bassist Peter Kerlin and drummer Jason Robira. Elsewhere "New Dad Blues" and "Greeneyed Pigmen (Get The Blade)" sting with a righteous fury beyond the piercing scree of guitarist Jim McHugh's electric phin or Jeff Tobias' saxophone skronks, and the band's cover of Alice Coltrane's "Ptah, the El Daoud" transforms her meditative elegy into a fiery protest march. The songs crackle with an energy informed by passionate disgust of the status quo realized on the album cover's illustration of the Kool-Aid Man battling the personifications of evil from across the world. A psychedelicized avatar for the general wrath and action that they believe in."

When This Life Is Over [LP]
$19.98  17.98

Hannah Mohan writes, 'We took inspiration from our lyrics 'When this life is over/no more rules/ no more orders' and let that set the tone of the whole album. Mohan continues, 'We wanted to break the rules of what an album should be like. We included bedroom demos and didn't worry about how we might play these songs live which can be very restrictive. We let everything go so that we could be our most creative selves. Although the title and theme might appear dark, it's actually about the remarkable beautiful freedom of the afterlife.
