Along with their recording of Alfred Schnittke's Concerto Grosso No. 5, this is another magnificent exception to the Vienna Philharmonic's conservative reputation--more Norgard and Schnittke, please!

A splendid successor to Polyphony's exemplary previous Part CD "Triodion". And I love the statement in Meurig Bowen's program notes that Part "is as close to being a 'household name' as any Classical composer in this lower-brow century can hope to be."

From the opening of the unaccompanied Violin Sonata No. 3 through the close of the Symphony No. 10, Weinberg's music is given performances of the utmost commitment and integrity. (How many living musicians have enhanced repertoire awareness as extensively as Gidon Kremer?)

From a musical point of view, this release fully deserves inclusion on this list, but unfortunately MDG carries on the grand German tradition of failing to provide English translations of the texts.

This reissue documents the second-ever live performance on December 20, 1962 of this never-to-be-silenced masterpiece, and it remains the most gripping and electrifying version ever released on recording.
