BACH: Partitas Nos. 1, 5, and 6. Murray Perahia, piano. Sony 88697443612.
This recording demonstrates anew how great a loss it would have been if Perahia had not fully recovered from his second and most recent hand ailment.

CARTER: String Quartets Nos. 2-4. Pacifica Quartet. Naxos 8559363 (63694393632).
Elliott Carter, born in 1908, continues to compose major works in his 101st year--his new Flute Concerto will be premiered by the Boston Symphony in 2010--and the Pacifica Quartet plays his five string quartets so marvelously that I wish he would write a sixth quartet just for them.

HANDEL: "Furore" (opera arias). Joyce DiDonato, mezzo-soprano; Les Talens Lyriques; Christophe Rousset, conductor. Virgin Classics 509995190382.
DiDonato gives her all in this collection of arias devoted to different aspects of a woman's fury, the cumulative impact of which proved to be something of a turn-on.

MACMILLAN: St. John Passion. London Symphony Orchestra & Chorus; Colin Davis, cond.
My response to this 90-minute work has been more positive than the mixed reception afforded it by the critics, but it ultimately made the list because Colin Davis, who was 80 years old at the time of the work's premiere, inspired such a commanding, top-notch performance.

MALAWSKI/K. MEYER: Piano Trios. Altenberg Trio Wien. Challenge Classics 72310 (60891723102).
I still have my LP recording from over 20 years ago of Krzysztof Meyer's Piano Trio, so I couldn't have been happier when this new CD recording of the work was released, especially since it is paired with Artur Malawski's compelling trio. (Note: the Meyer is ten minutes longer than indicated in the printed timings)

MOZART: Piano Concertos Nos. 7, 12, and 23. Leon Fleisher, piano and conductor; Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra. Sony 88697435052.
Fleisher is better suited to Concerto No. 12 than any pianist I have heard, and his performance of Concerto No. 23 now ranks alongside Wilhelm Kempff's in my affections (though it must be said that Kempff receives stronger orchestral support).

SCHUMANN: Music for Cello and Piano. Steven Isserlis, cello; Denes Varjon, piano. Hyperion CDA 67661 (03457117661).
I had the highest expectations for this CD because Schumann is one of Isserlis' heroes, and it pleases me to report that Isserlis rose to the occasion beautifully.

TCHAIKOVSKY: Symphony No.5; Francesca da Rimini. Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela; Gustavo Dudamel, cond. Deutsche Grammophon 02894778022
The best recorded example yet of Dudamel's fantastic achievements with this youth orchestra (also go to YouTube to watch the performance by Dudamel and the SBYOV of the second movement from Shostakovich's Symphony No. 10--WOW!).

"Tragediennes 2" (Baroque arias). Veronique Gens, soprano; Les Talens Lyriques; Christophe Rousset, cond. Virgin Classics 509992165742. A sequel that for once is at least as exemplary as its predecessor, so let us hope Gens gives us "Tragediennes 3".

"Song of Songs". Stile Antico. Harmonia mundi SACD HMU 807489 (09304674896). These Renaissance settings of the Song of Solomon are so exquisitely performed and recorded that this CD might very well serve you better on a hot date than a Sinatra CD.

The following is only available from Switzerland and not through Waterloo, but I still had to include it on the list:
THEW: 12 settings of Rhaeto-Romanic poems for a cappella chorus. Vocal Ensemble Hottingen Zurich (recorded 2009);_"Fetes de Noel": piano works by Liszt, Liapunov, Busoni, and Bartok. Warren Thew, piano (recorded 1983). Liverpool Record DMR 766 (no barcode!).
Warren Thew (1927-1984) was best known for his legendary feats as a pianist, drawing effusive praise from the likes of William Kapell and Nadia Boulanger, but he was also a very fine composer, and in 1982-83 he completed 40 choral settings of Rhaeto-Romanic poems, 12 of which are included on this CD (and which would be ideally suited to Austin's own Conspirare). As for "Fetes de Noel", Thew's final recording project as a pianist (he rarely made recordings, as he loathed the process), I'll never forget my first encounter with the original LP release because I couldn't imagine better performances of any of these works, yet these completely unedited recordings were not released in his lifetime because Thew broke off the project, though even now they still sound perfect to me.

Heaven Knows – The Woes
Reliably incredible live, Brooklyn’s Woes have struggled to capture their stompin’, hollerin’, instrument swappin’, roots-y energy on record. Heaven Knows comes very close. The revolving cast of players have settled into a steady line-up, and this release is their finest hour. At the center of the exuberant banjos, French horns, organs, and accordions is the distinctive voice of Osei Essed. Osei’s agile vocals range from croon to growl to moan to roar. 2009 brought The Woes to Austin for the first time. Don’t miss them when they come back.

Magnolia – Wooden Birds

Live in Louisville – Carrie Rodriguez
Recorded in 2007 at the Brown Theater while opening for Lucinda Williams. Carrie’s set draws heavily from her solo debut Seven Angels on a Bicycle (2006). The band seems to have grown into these songs on the road. Carrie’s assured vocals trade some twang for some soul, an evolution more pronounced on her 2008 release She Ain’t Me.

Make-Out With Violence OST– The Non-Commissioned Officers
Here are some things I know: 2 discs. 44 songs. This soundtrack is longer than the movie it represents. Any description of the movie would be misleading. The Non-Coms are from Nashville & a couple of them act in the movie. Restrained pop craftsmen making audacious choices make toes tap. Loving & caring for & torturing a zombie who used to be your unrequited love is complex. And so is this album. Go find it and listen to it. I can’t get track 12 on disc 2 out of my head. Since October.
