 RUSSELL
RUSSELL'S 2010 CONTRAPUNTAL CORNUCOPIA!

Featuring: *"S" Composers Countdown, *Elliott Carter's 102nd Birthday, *Boxed Sets and Global Explorations, *List of Jewish Pop Stars declared "Treyf" for recording Christmas albums...

(Starting with two surgeries, this was a tumultuous year for me, thus my 2010 listening was dominated by music of greater emotional complexity, which proved very therapeutic. As a_result, my 2010 "Best of" list is more personal than 2009's more standard line-up, which means...I'll sell far fewer CDs this year--sorry, boss.)

5) STRAVINSKY: Complete Music for Violin & Piano. Anthony Marwood, violin; Thomas Ades, piano. Hyperion CDA 67723 (03457117723--2 CDs for the price of 1). Winning performances of winning music at a winning price--need I say more?

4) SCHUTZ: Die Siebenworte; Johannes Passion. Ars Nova Copenhagen; Paul Hillier, conductor. Dacapo 8226093 (63694360932). The music of Heinrich Schutz remains criminally under-recorded, but thanks to Paul Hillier's three exemplary CDs of his music Schutz's fortunes may be on the rise.

3) SHCHEDRIN:The Enchanted Wanderer. Sergei Aleksashkin, bass; Kristina Kapustinskaya, mezzo-soprano; Evgeny Akimov, tenor; Mariinsky Chorus and Orchestra; Valery Gergiev, cond. Mariinsky SACD 0504 (82223185042--2 CDs). You don't have to be a native of Russia to sense and understand those deeply and undeniably_ Russian moments evoked by their composers, and this concert opera, which was originally commissioned by the NY Philharmonic, is haunted by such moments.

2) SCHUBERT: "Heliopolis" (19 lieder). Matthias Goerne, baritone; Ingo Metzmacher, piano. Harmonia mundi HMC 902035 (79488192492). Though Goerne's breathing is captured rather prominently, it does not tarnish this beautifully conceived and performed recital, the cumulative impact of which affected me profoundly.

1) SHOSTAKOVICH: 24 Preludes & Fugues, Op. 87--2 recordings: a) Tatiana Nikolayeva, piano (recorded 1962). Doremi 7991-3 (72372146205--2 CDs, plus 1 DVD of a live 1990 performance of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1). b) Alexander Melnikov, piano. Harmonia mundi HMC 902019-20 (79488194262--3 CDs for the price of 2). The most spiritual moments in Shostakovich's music arose in the darkest periods of his life, one of the most notable examples being his Op. 87 Preludes & Fugues. For those who are only familiar with Nikolayeva's valedictory recordings of Op. 87, which I adore, the appearance - on CD (finally!) of her 1962 recording should prove revelatory, demonstrating why Shostakovich was inspired to write this music and dedicate it to her--he was present at these recording sessions, and was rumored to have turned pages for her! But why did Doremi add a Tchaikovsky DVD and charge full price for 3 discs when it would have been more appropriate to pair it with Nikolayeva's audio recordings of Tchaikovsky's music? In spite of the extra cost, this incredible version of Op. 87, for which I all too happily paid $50 for a used LP set over 20 years ago, is absolutely not to be missed. That said, you must also save room on your shelves for Alexander Melnikov's performances, which are borne of tremendous study and consideration, not to mention flawless technique, so I found myself admiring even those interpretations with which I was less in agreement. Melnikov presented Nos. 1-12 as Book One and Nos. 13-24 as Book Two, but the latter wouldn't quite fit onto one CD, so No. 24 was placed on a third CD, the flipside of which is a DVD extra. Personally, I find this frustrating because Nos. 1-13 would easily have fit onto the first disc, and he could have left a 30-second gap between Nos. 12 and 13 to emphasize the separation of the two books, with Nos. 14-24 readily fitting onto the second disc. At least there's no extra charge for the third disc, and, again, this version is not to be missed.

ELLIOTT CARTER: BORN DECEMBER 11, 1908 - STILL ALIVE, STILL COMPOSING CARTER: 16 Compositions (2002-2009). Various artists. Bridge 9314 (09040493142--2 CDs). Elliott Carter composed around 40 works during the decade leading up to his 100th birthday, roughly one-third of which were composed between the ages of 98 and 100. No composer creating any type_of music in any part of the world at any time in history has ever produced such an extensive body of_work at such an advanced age. Carter has become more fascinated than ever with the expressive and virtuosic possibilities of orchestral instruments, both in an unaccompanied context and a concerto_context, and as his creativity seems unending I hope all his forthcoming works find their way onto recordings and thus onto my future "Best of" lists, assuming I live long enough to keep up with him.

REISSUE OF THE YEAR - HOLMBOE: Complete String Quartets. Kontra Quartet. Dacapo 8207001 (6369437011--7 CDs for the price of 2). If Shostakovich's cycle of 15 string quartets and Bartok's cycle of 6 quartets are recognized as the_greatest of the 20th century, which other 20th century composers of quartets belong in their exalted_company? This cycle of 20 quartets by Danish composer Vagn Holmboe, which is now available for_only $30.99, might place a very close third - stop staring at me in disbelief and buy it now!

REISSUE RUNNER-UP - SCHNITTKE: Symphonies Nos. 0-9. Various artists. BIS 1767-68 (67575402073--6 CDs for the price of 2). The greatest of the postwar Russian composers, who emerged as the heir to Shostakovich, Schnittke_in his symphonies seemed very much of the same mind as Charles Ives, who famously said,_"Beauty in Music is too often confused with something that lets the ears lie back in an easy chair."_With the possible exception of the Symphony No. 0 from Schnittke's student years, these symphonies are not for squeamish blue-haired non-adventurous undead mall-walkers; for everyone else, repeated_auditions should lead to considerable rewards (and occasional sleepless nights).

BEST LOCAL CD - THE INHERITANCE: (self-titled). Consignment. 09999537902--revised barcode forthcoming. Now performing at East Side Show Room every Tuesday night, The Inheritance is a sextet possessing_great chemistry and a very diverse repertoire with an Eastern European emphasis. Astonishingly, this_CD was recorded only three months into their existence, and I can't wait for more!

BEST 2010 IN-STORE: BASSEKOU KOUYATE (Record Store Day last April--FANTASTIC!)

** Special Thanks to Berthold Seliger, who contacted me from Berlin at the beginning of this year in response to my 2009 list, and upon his arrival in Austin during SXSW traded CDs with me that were unavailable in our respective parts of the world. I have especially derived tremendous satisfaction from a CD entitled "Adagh" by a group from Mali named Tamikrest, and I will always be grateful to Mr. Seliger for its presence in my collection.**
