The last place you’ll find Benjamin Booker is where he was yesterday. Following two critically acclaimed albums marked by his signature fuzzy americana-inspired garage rock and soul sound, world tours, and opening slots with the likes of Jack White, Tame Impala, and Neil Young…he disappeared. “I wanted to get to this sound, but I didn’t know how. At some point I decided I’m going to find it or die trying.” He spent years tinkering in a loft near Skid Row in Los Angeles before ending up across the globe in Perth, Australia. Trading stems via email, Booker crafted his third album with LA underground hip-hop mastermind Kenny Segal. The new album, LOWER, mixes experimental hip hop, dream and noise pop, and singer-songwriter music into something that is entirely his own. Through the changes, Booker’s lyrical exploration of pain and longing have been persistent.

Green Vinyl. The arrival of a new Mogwai album - their eleventh - is cause for great celebration. The album's title, The Bad Fire, is a working-class Glaswegian term for Hell. It reflects the difficult time that members of the band were going through. New to the studio was American producer John Congleton, known for his work with Explosions In The Sky, Sigur RĂłs, John Grant and pretty much everyone in between. Congleton's work can be heard on the album's three singles. The album opener "God Gets You Back" sounds like Daft Punk being hunted by My Bloody Valentine, while "Fanzine Made Of Flesh" sounds like a victory parade for a baby yeti; and "Lion Rumpus" does actually sound like a lion rumpus. The music of Mogwai is a difficult thing to describe, but an easy thing to experience. At punishing volume, it can annihilate your body, leaving you as little more than a head which should by rights fall helplessly to the ground. Yet the music contains an updraft, a sense of beauty encased in the onslaught. This holds you up, suspended and empowered, reminding you that paradise is your birthright. This is especially true of The Bad Fire. It may have been created in dark conditions, but all that is transcended by the act of four musicians working together here, now, in the moment - the only place where Mogwai exist.

Studio

West Coast

Vinyl: $26.98 UNAVAILABLE
Some called Studio, the project of Swedish musicians Dan Lissvik and Rasmus Hägg, "the missing link between The Cure and Lindstrom," Pitchfork heard Durutti Column and Can, as the duo's story became swept up in a loosely developing scene - adjacent first to the label Service (Jens Lekman, The Whitest Boy Alive) and later Sincerely Yours (The Tough Alliance, jj) - and a precursor to the 2010s boom at the axis of electronic and psychedelic music guided by indie greats like Caribou, Four Tet, and Darkside. West Coast, their seminal 2006 debut, captured a faraway romanticism of Balearic brushed up against Krautrock, disco, dub, and afro-beat, with pop lyricism lifted from new wave, all made modern by two art school grads in Gothenburg. First pressed in a small vinyl-only run via their own Information label, the album has been notably absent from most streaming services, and the internet's record of it's initial impact is all but fossilized from a bygone blog era, while it's sound is simply untraceable to any one moment in music. Outside of three 7" releases, they'd keep the music to themselves for several more years. In 2005, Hägg remembers, "We got our degrees and were kicked out of our studio spaces so all these recordings were just piled up. A year later we dusted them off and started to deconstruct and assemble them in a more drawn-out fashion." In the same breadth, they cite DJ Screw, J Dilla, and Joy Division, along with early '80s European live DJ sets from the likes of Beppe Loda, DJ Mozart, and Baldelli as reference points. "The anything-goes mentality was very encouraging and was a big cornerstone to the Studio sound," says Hägg. "But there's so much more to the picture, we were not that young then and had lots of musical baggage in our suitcases, the new thing was that we finally let it all come through, not bound by any borders that was often the case with music identity in Sweden during the 90s."In the afterglow of the record's 2007 reception, Studio receded from view, clouded behind a mountain of remix requests (including one for Kylie Minogue that saw release) and label bureaucracy. "It's easy to wish we would have done some proper recordings of our own instead," Hägg reflects. But both artists, now well into respective careers beyond Studio, have come to peace with West Coast as their most enduring effort together. Lissvik adds, "It serves as a good reminder for me to keep to that decision and promise and to continue exploring and growing."

Larkin Poe, the dynamic sister duo known for their electrifying blend of Southern rock, blues, and Americana, emerges once again onto the musical landscape with their eagerly anticipated album, ‘Bloom’. Following their Grammy-winning success with ‘Blood Harmony’ in 2024, the duo has ventured deeper into their musical journey, crafting a collection of songs that resonate with introspection, authenticity, and a profound connection to their roots in American music. The album "Bloom" marks a significant evolution in Larkin Poe's creative journey. All the songs were born from collaborations between Megan, Rebecca, and co-producer Tyler Bryant, reflecting a synergy that extends beyond mere musical partnership. As Rebecca observes, "'Bloom' is about finding oneself amidst the noise of the world, about wholeheartedly embracing the flaws and idiosyncrasies that make us real." This theme of self-acceptance is central to the album's narrative: celebrating individuality against a backdrop of contemporary blues and rock influences. Reflecting on the album’s thematic core, Megan explains, “In one way or another, pretty much all of the songs on this album are about finding yourself, knowing yourself, and separating the truth of who you are from societal expectations.” This sentiment permeates through the first song, “Mockingbird”, a contemplative piece on personal growth and staying true to oneself amidst life’s twists and turns. Rebecca adds, “‘Mockingbird’ is a tender reflection on the perpetual journey of becoming. When viewed through a reductive lens, the inevitable countless missteps I’ve taken in my life can feel disheartening — but looking too long in the rearview can be harmful to one’s future. Choosing to find the hidden meaning in the pitstops and messy detours that life sometimes demands has felt like a very important perspective shift.” Known for their sincere songwriting, the Lovell sisters place a spotlight on storytelling with ‘Bloom’. Each track unfolds like a chapter, with lyrics that wind deeper and deeper towards the heart of Larkin Poe. Rebecca reflects, “Songwriting takes center stage with this record; the lyrics hit home in a real way.” Their influences from ‘70s Southern rock are unmistakable, yet woven into a modern context that feels simultaneously nostalgic and fresh. The album’s lead single, “Bluephoria”, captures the essence of Larkin Poe’s genre-bending exploration. Rebecca describes, "It's a rock ’n’ roll rumination on the duality of the human experience, where suffering and joy intertwine to create meaning." With lyrics inspired by blues legend Furry Lewis, the track exemplifies their ability to blend personal narratives with universal themes; while the riff-heavy, psychedelic-flavored musical underpinnings make it primed for take off into the stratosphere on the live stage. Another standout track, “If God Is A Woman”, melds lush sonic landscapes with lyrics that ground listeners in contemporary questions through the blues-soaked sounds of the Mississippi hill country; while the gritty rock anthem and punk energy of “Pearls” addresses the challenges of maintaining authenticity in a digital age where public personas are under constant scrutiny. It’s a testament to Larkin Poe’s willingness to confront modern realities while staying true to their musical heritage. Closing the album is “Bloom Again”, a poignant love song in the style of the Everly Brothers, showcasing the sisters’ harmonies in a deeply personal light. Megan fondly recalls, “One of our friends and heroes, Mike Campbell suggested we write a song following in the footsteps of Phil and Don Everly to showcase our sister harmonies; we took his counsel to heart, and ‘Bloom Again’ was born.” It’s a fitting finale that leaves listeners with a sense of catharsis and a desire for more. With their distinctive blend of poetic lyricism, masterful instrumentation, and soulful harmonies ‘Bloom’ not only cements Larkin Poe’s status as musical innovators, but also reaffirms their commitment to crafting meaningful, soul-stirring music. As modern torchbearers of American roots music, the Lovell sisters continue their journey of self-discovery and celebration of the authentic self. With this album, Larkin Poe invites us to bloom alongside them, embracing the beauty of growth and the richness of their American, musical heritage.

The trio of Mary Chapin Carpenter, Julie Fowlis, and Karine Polwart first came together as a writing experiment coming out of the pandemic lockdown. With touring off the calendar, multi-Award winning US singer-songwriter Carpenter was looking for something new and reached out to Fowlis and Polwart, two highly acclaimed Scottish singer-songwriters whose work she had long admired. Prompted by admiration and respect for each other’s work, the trio quickly came up with a plan and, once able, met in Northern Scotland for an extended writing retreat to see what magic could be made. The success of this initial experiment led to a second writing session and, in early 2024, the 10-song album Looking For The Thread was recorded at Real World Studios in Box, England, with Josh Kaufman (Bob Weir, The National, The Hold Steady) producing and a world-class band of musicians: Rob Burger (piano, organ, accordion, keys),Chris Vatalaro (drums, percussion), Cameron Ralston (bass), Caoimhin O’Raghallaigh (hardanger d’amore) and Josh Kaufman himself (guitar, keys).
