Music Releases for Friday 6/21
The Raconteurs – Jack White, Brendan Benson, Jack Lawrence, and Patrick Keeler – have announced the release of their long-awaited new album, HELP US STRANGER, which is the GRAMMY® Award-winning rock band’s third studio LP and first new album in more than a decade. Out on Friday, June 21, HELP US STRANGER sees the mighty combo reassembled, stronger and perhaps even more vital than ever before as they continue to push rock 'n' roll forward into its future, bonding prodigious riffs, blues power, sinewy psychedelia, Detroit funk, and Nashville soul via Benson and White’s uncompromising songcraft and the band’s steadfast musical muscle. With HELP US STRANGER, The Raconteurs have returned right when they are needed most, unified and invigorated with boundless ambition, infinite energy and a collectivist spirit operating at the peak of its considerable powers, once again creating a sound and fury only possible when all four of its members come together.
Ride Me Back Home is another incredible addition to Willie Nelson's legendary catalog that finds him working once again with producer Buddy Cannon. Ride Me Back Home sits beside 2017's God's Problem Child and 2018's Last Man Standing as a trilogy of superior songcraft exploring ideas of mortality with wisdom, empathy and a winking love of life. Nelson and Cannon co-wrote a handful of songs but also call on their favorite songsmiths…great writers with great stories to tell: Sonny Throckmorton, Guy Clark, Mac Davis, Buzz Rabin. The result is a magical collection of tunes with emphasis on the lyric. Backed by an amazing band of Nashville gunslingers, Ride Me Back Home finds Willie Nelson making some of the most inspired work of his career.
This June, The Prince Estate, in partnership with Warner Bros. Records and TIDAL, will release Originals, a 15-track album featuring 14 previously unreleased recordings that illuminate the vital, behind-the-scenes role Prince played in other artists' careers. The tracks were selected collaboratively by Troy Carter, on behalf of The Prince Estate, and JAY-Z.
By the mid-1980s, Prince was dominating the charts even as a writer/producer with songs he'd composed and recorded for others. In addition to releasing nine of his most commercially successful full-length albums, he also wrote and recorded endless reels of material for proteges The Time, Vanity 6, Sheila E., Apollonia 6, Jill Jones, the Family, and Mazarati. Occasionally, Prince's original demo recordings would be used as master takes on their albums, with only minor alterations to the instrumentation and a replacement of the vocal tracks. Other times, artists would rely on his demos to guide them through their own recording process, with Prince's initial take informing their final version of his song. The aggregate effect was a complete saturation and transformation of the pop music landscape, with Prince both leading and subverting mainstream culture.
Black Pumas has announced their highly anticipated debut album set for release on June 21. The band is led by the creative partnership between Grammy Award-winning guitarist / producer Adrian Quesada and 27-year-old songwriter Eric Burton. Burton is a relative newcomer who arrived in Austin in 2015 after busking his way across the country from Los Angeles, while Quesada has a storied reputation for playing in bands like Grupo Fantasma and Brownout.
After the two connected via friends in the Austin scene, they began to collaborate on a new sound that transmutes soul into something idiosyncratically modern. Reminiscent of Ghostface Killah and Motown in equal measure, this original sound ensured that Black Pumas’ weekly residency at C-Boys quickly became “the hottest party in town” (Austin-American Statesman).
Hot Chip's electrifying seventh album, A Bath Full of Ecstasy, is the group’s definitive release, crystallizing the sound they’ve become celebrated for – bridging euphoria and melancholy with colorful melodies, idiosyncratic vocalizations and pounding electronic pop rhythms. Recorded in Paris and London, A Bath Full Of Esctasy sees the group (Owen Clarke, Al Doyle, Joe Goddard, Felix Martin and Alexis Taylor) open up to a more adventurous and collaborative song-writing process, choosing to work with outside producers for the first time: Philippe Zdar, the French maestro who’s shaped the magic of Cassius and Phoenix, and Rodaidh McDonald , the Scot who’s collaborated with The XX, David Byrne and Sampha, among others. A Bath Full of Ecstasy is a fresh, invigorating and essential new chapter in the band's career. The record is a celebration of joy but recognizes the struggle it can take to get to that point of happiness. It is time to get lost in A Bath Full of Ecstasy.

An Obelisk is the sixth album from Titus Andronicus, which finds the noted rock band under the stewardship of producer and legendary rocker Bob Mould (Hüsker Dü, Sugar, et al.). This trans-generational meeting of the minds has yielded the most immediate, intense, and unadorned Titus Andronicus record to date. Clocking in it a brisk 38 minutes and change, it is also the shortest. Recorded over six breathless days at Steve Albini's world-renowned Electrical Audio studio in Chicago, An Obelisk presents the sound of Titus Andronicus, rock band, at it's most irreducible, as monolithic as the album's titular monument.
Their first album together in nearly 10 years, Breakdown On 20th Ave. South is an album of Julie Miller songs produced by Buddy Miller. As a couple and individually, Buddy and Julie have been nominated and received multiple awards including Grammys, Americana Awards, Dove Awards among others. Julie Millers songs have been recorded by a diverse range of artists including Emmylou Harris, Lee Ann Womack, Levon Helm, Solomon Burke, and Miranda Lambert. Buddy Miller is known for his work as a guitarist, performing live and in the studio with artists such as Robert Plant, Alison Krauss, Steve Earle and Emmylou Harris. Buddys production credits include albums with Plant, Harris, Earle, Patty Griffin, Shawn Colvin and many more.Breakdown On 20th Ave. South is a first rate showcase for Julies finely crafted lyrics. There is a line from the track Spittin' on Fire that best illustrates Julies sharp edged word play: You're a dangerous little storm, one part cold and one part warm. The song War Child is a cry for help that usually goes unheard. A cry for for help from thousands and thousands of children stolen from their families, forced to carry a gun at ages as young as 7 or 8. Never to see home again. Tracks like, Im Gonna Make You Love Me and Everything Is Your Fault hint at the ups and downs of love. The entire album is tied together by Buddys unfussy production style. Breakdown On 20th Ave. South is a treat for long time fans of Buddy & Julie and a delightful discovery for new listeners.
The third full-length from Mannequin Pussy, Patience is an album fascinated with the physical experience of the body, its songs tracking the movements of mouths and hands and racing hearts, skin and spit and teeth and blood. Deeply attuned to the power of their own physicality, the Philadelphia-based band channels complex emotion in blistering riffs, thrashing rhythms, vocals that feel as immediate and untamed as a gut reaction. But throughout Patience, the Philadelphia-based band contrasts that raw vitality with intricate melodies and finely detailed arrangements, building a strange and potent tension that makes the album all the more cathartic. The follow-up to Romantic—a 2016 release praised by Pitchfork for “combin[ing] punk, shoegaze, death metal, and more, with the ferocious push-pull energy of a mosh pit”—Patience came to life at Studio 4 in Conshohocken, Pennsylvania. In creating the album, Mannequin Pussy worked with producer/engineer Will Yip (Quicksand, The Menzingers), shaping an explosive sound that never overshadows the subtlety of their songwriting. “In the past there’s been a chaotic feeling to the recording process, but working with Will put us in a different headspace,” says Dabice. “It helped us show our progression over the past few years and make a very crisp-sounding record, without losing the dirtiness of what Mannequin Pussy really is.”
Atlantic Oscillations marks the return of world-renowned British producer Quantic with his most cohesive and intricate album to date. Bringing together new players and concepts with a dance orientated sound that has enchanted fans and tastemakers across the world for nearly two decades, it showcases Will Quantic Hollands artistry and rare ability to intertwine the electronic with the orchestral. Embracing his own love of albums that travel, taking the listener on twists and turns, with the loss of the album narrative that has occurred in this day of streaming, Holland utilises the space created to explore more creativity as a producer. As he admits, on the whole, the common theme on this record is that it is probably more intricate and arranged than previous records. I spent three times as long as any other Quantic record and spent a lot of time in the detail. This meticulous attitude is apparent throughout; each track has been crafted to draw the listeners attention, with elements of both musical originality and a sense of modernity.

35 years after their release, Daniel Johnston's much loved cassette recordings Hi How Are You and Yip Jump Music are available in a double vinyl album format for the first time. Out of print on LP for more than a decade, this limited edition 3 disc collectors edition includes a Hi How Are You poster.
The stars have finally aligned and the triple-tailed comet has reappeared. Keep your ears to the skies for another momentous encounter with Bad Books III. What Andy Hull calls their new “Simon & Garfunkel in space” style—sparse structures, simple harmonies, and gorgeous sonic embellishments. But considering both their inter-personal dynamics and joyful congregation, perhaps it would be more accurate to refer to the 2019 version of Bad Books as “Simon & Garfunkel as true friends.”
Two Door Cinema Club's highly-anticipated fourth album False Alarm finds the three piece gloriously unshackled and creatively at the peak of their game. Across it's ten tracks, False Alarm wryly scans and satirizes the social and environmental woes of 2019 through the prism of wonderfully off-kilter pop, simultaneously borrowing from and warping elements of future pop, disco, rock, funk and soul. Recorded in sessions between London and LA with producer Jacknife Lee (U2, REM, The Killers), it's an LP that takes the familiar and twists it, to startling and stimulating effect.
Gold Past Life marks both an end and a beginning for Fruit Bats. It's the end of an unintentional thematic trilogy of records that began with 2014's EDJ (a solo record by name, but a Fruit Bats release in spirit) and hit an emotional peak with 2016's Absolute Loser. They encompassed years of loss, displacement, and the persistent, low-level anxiety of the current political climate. They were written in the wake of friends who left these earthly confines and families that could have been. But these salves, these songs on Gold Past Life, also represent new beginnings-the journeys that await after making it through troubled times. Gold Past Life is about rejecting notions of idealized nostalgia ("Gold Past Life") and the process of grounding oneself in the present, both geographically ("A Lingering Love," "Ocean") and spiritually ("Drawn Away"). With Gold Past Life, Eric Johnson of Fruit B hopes to bring more immediacy to the music and share positivity, hope, and motivation to keep on keepin' on with a wider audience.
Two-time Grammy winning Americana icon Jim Lauderdale returns with From Another World, a ten song collection of empathy, love, forgiveness and humility, an antidote to the anger and divisiveness of todays world. McCartney-esque melodies, Dylan-esque lyrics, bluegrass, and twangy psychedelia collide on From Another World. Jim has once again opened his heart wide and delivered a beautiful record where country music still cries with the sound of pedal steel guitar and beautiful lyrics flow through aching indelible melodies.

This is the first ever release of this pivotal performance by British alt-rock band Travis, timed around the 20th anniversary of the show and their breakthrough album, The Man Who. When The Man Who appeared in 1999, it eclipsed Travis’ previous successes, going platinum six times in the U.K., and going on to sell 3.5M copies worldwide, spawning more hit singles such as “Why Does It Always Rain On Me?” and “Writing To Reach You.” This Glastonbury performance became legendary, when, as Travis began to perform their song “Why Does It Always Rain On Me?” (after several hours of sunny weather), it began to rain exactly as the first line of the song was sung.
20th Anniversary reissue of Travis’ iconic album The Man Who. The band’s sophomore album went platinum six times in the UK and includes the timeless singles, ‘Writing To Reach You’, ‘Driftwood’, ‘Turn’ and possibly the band’s most iconic song, ‘Why Does It Always Rain On Me.’ Special edition formats are available including a deluxe boxed set, featuring 2-LPs, 2-CDs and a 58-page commemorative photobook. Bonus disc content offers favorite The Man Who B-sides, as selected by the band.

This Is The Town: A Tribute to Nilsson (Volume 2) celebrates the songs of the illustrious Harry Nilsson. Throughout this captivating 14-track set, defying expectations is a continuous theme. The kindred spirits of Nilsson assembled here are as stellar as they are varied in their art, each underscoring different facets of his songwriting. A follow up to the initial This Is The Town tribute released by Royal Potato Family in 2014, this second volume once again finds producer Kenny Siegal at the helm, capturing the album's vibrant and diverse performances at Old Soul Studios in Catskill, NY. Kicking things off in grand fashion is Mikaela Davis's rendition of Take 54, the opening cut from Nilsson s 1972 release, 'Son of Schmilsson.' Davis a classically trained harpist injects her own brand of feminist swagger, turning the masculine bravado of the original inside out. Equally intriguing is Martha Wainwright's take on Daddy's Song a standout that is particularly revealing in its approach. Here Wainwright opts to slow the tempo and strip away the 60s psychedelia of the original to reveal the heartbreak of abandon ensconced within Nilsson's lyrics. It serves as a reminder that even though Nilsson was a pop artist, he was always conscious of the depths of his emotions and surroundings; being one-part troubled troubadour, one-part song-and-dance-man never seemed in conflict. Legendary rockers Cheap Trick get down and dirty with raucous guitars that emanate manic fuzz on their reading of Ambush. Vocalist Robin Zander's sublime vocals are unparalleled in their expression of the anxieties of war. But the tension is far from bombast, as the performance does everything it can to convey Nilsson's wry wit, something he was able to masterfully weave into even the most contentious of topics. Elsewhere, indie rockers Invisible Familiars add swirling synths and a percussive march to Old Forgotten Soldier, while Valley Queen uncovers a darker, more haunting depth in the Nilsson hit I Guess The Lord Must Be In New York City. The attention to detail within these 14 recordings and the obvious love for the man who penned them by the artists assembled here exemplifies the timelessness of Nilsson's songs. Look no further than his recent resurgence, thanks in no small part to the use of Gotta Get Up in the Netflix series, 'Russian Doll,' as testimony to Nilsson's enduring charm and everlasting intrigue. At its peak, This Is The Town: A Tribute to Nilsson (Volume 2) lays before the listener a roadmap of the many directions to be discovered in the songs of one of pop's most exquisite artists.
Richard Reed Parry’s Quiet River of Dust, is a meditative, widescreen musical experience with Beach Boy harmonies and a hypnotic pulse. Layered songs that move in a linear fashion, following a current rather than circular composition. Japanese folk myths, death poems and British folk music are tributaries flowing into a river of avant-garde composition and traditional song craft, written and performed by a member of the Grammy-winning rock band, Arcade Fire. Being released as two volumes, Quiet River of Dust Vol. 2 is the follow up to 2018’s Quiet River of Dust Vol. 1 . Long before he joined Arcade Fire in 2003, Richard Reed Parry grew up in a thriving folk music community in Toronto, where house parties were full of singing. While a student of electroacoustic music and contemporary dance in university, he formed the instrumental ensemble Bell Orchestre, who have released three albums. In 2014, he released an album of biologically inspired compositions, Music for Heart and Breath, on the prestigious Deutsche Grammophon classical label. Guest performers on this project include Parry’s partner Laurel Sprengelmeyer of Little Scream, Stef Schneider of Bell Orchestre, Dallas Good of the Sadies, Yuka Honda of Cibo Matto, Amedeo Pace from Blonde Redhead, and The National’s Aaron and Bryce Dessner.
The masked men known as Los Straitjackets have tuned in to put their signature surf rock twist on some of television's greatest theme songs on their forthcoming EP, Channel Surfing. The themes covered include Game of Thrones, The Andy Griffith Show, Ken Burns' The Civil War, and a medley of Dancing with the Stars and Sex and the City. The vinyl features all of the tracks on both sides of the record and a digital download included.
Holy Ghost! are one of the few modern-day practitioners of pure, unadulterated dance music; crafting each sound from scratch with unapologetic, exacting precision in the studio before delivering hit after hit to the dance floor. This analog approach to “electronic” music heavily informs the band’s third album Work coming June 21, 2019 on West End Records.
The Hollywood Vampires return with new music from their explosive second album, 'Rise.' Rock and roll royalty Joe Perry, Hollywood superstar Johnny Depp and shock rock icon Alice Cooper join forces once again for the unmissable rock album of 2019. Seconds into the opening track 'I Want My Now,' it's clear this supergroup has created something special - the chemistry between the individuals is unmistakeable when they come together on stage or in the recording studio. Forget the star-studded lineup's individual reputations, 'Rise' is some of the purest, unapologetic and most enjoyable rock and roll of the year, made by masters of the craft and true fans of the form. ''Rise' is not only a totally different animal than the first Vampires album, it is unique to anything I've ever been a part of. I approached it very differently than I usually do when working on an album. Each of us; Joe, Johnny, Tommy and myself have written songs on this album. What is different though is that I didn't try to change any songs to be more 'Alice-like.' Because each of us has different influences, the sound of this album is very cool. I think that with this album, we are establishing what the Vampires' sound really is, whereas with the first album we were more tipping our hats to our fallen rock n roll brothers.' - Alice Cooper
New Album release from Aaron Watson Aaron on his new album - I poured my heart and soul into writing and recording the Red Bandana album. I approached it with an energy and passion that I hadn’t channeled on my past albums. I dug deep when writing the 20 songs for the record and I went at it like it could be my last record. It won’t be the last, of course, but we pulled out all the stops with Jordan Lehning, my co-producer, in the studio to make it an epic musical journey. Red Bandana is my heart and soul.”
Old school death metal band Memoriam have recorded the follow up to their highly acclaimed 2018 record “The Silent Vigil”. Produced by Russ Russell (Napalm Death, At the Gates, Dimmu Borgir) at Parlour Studios (Kettering, UK) the band has described “Requiem for Mankind”, their third full length release, as the culmination of what their previous two records were preparing them and their fanbase for. Big gritty production, aggressive vocals and music, and a curveball or two for good measure!
For over 50 years, Earth Wind and Fire provided the soundtrack to the lives of many. With award winning albums and chart-topping hits such as “September”, “Devotion”, “Reasons” and “Keep Your Head to the Sky” EWF have stood the test of time and continue to be a force in music. Philp Bailey, one of the lead singers, also experienced solo success with “Easy Lover” and “Walking on the Chinese Wall.” This new album, Love Will Find A Way, has Philip teamed up with some of today’s hottest, progressive Jazz artists such as Robert Glasper, Christian McBride, Kamasi Washington, Casey Benjamin, Chick Corea, Steve Gadd and more. The single, “Billy Jack”, was written by the legendary Curtis Mayfield and produced by both Robert Glasper and Philip Bailey.
Sanctuary Lakes present their debut, self-titled LP on Cutters Records. Opaque soundscapes forged from fluid basslines, aqueous guitar, naturalist field recordings and vague incantations, the Sanctuary Lakes sound values feeling over form, intention over intellect, imagination over the explicit, a faded watercolour image offering an ocean of interpretation in which to swim. Borne in Brooklyn during idle time improvising in front of the meditation station on television, Tim Hoey sent rough sketches of his noodling to Andy Szekeres in Melbourne, initially to see what his old friend made of them. Beyond merely offering feedback, Szekeres went ahead and added to the songs, initiating a workflow than became an almost wordless conversation between the two, as files drifted back and forth with the currents until deemed done. Arrangements are left loose, choruses never come - or that’s all there is, extended instrumental passages emphasise atmosphere over action, and field recordings of the channel whisper low in the mix. Production across the LP has a gently edgeless, soft-focus feeling akin to being submerged in a boundless body of water, at once engulfing and instinctively comforting. As two musicians with years and albums of experience under their belts, Sanctuary Lakes came together during a period of reflection and faint anxiety that their best ideas might be behind them. Work on the EP acted as a form of therapy and confirmed that the stream of creativity still runs strong. Tim Hoey is most widely known for his work in Cut Copy, Andy Szekeres in Midnight Juggernauts. Together they are Sanctuary Lakes. “In a sea of love, you and me belong, endless together.”
Following two albums of inimitable, challenging pop music that garnered global acclaim and marked Kirin J Callinan as a singularly unique talent, it is ironically singing other peoples’ songs that felt like the most truthful next step for Kirin as an artist. On Return To Center, Callinan’s trademark flamboyance is cut with a newfound fragility that comes curled up in an attempt to do justice to the songs he holds nearest and dearest.
This year, Collective Soul celebrates their 25th anniversary as one of rock's most influential bands. From their humble beginnings in Stockbridge, GA to the heights of playing to sold-out audiences all over the world, Collective Soul has cemented their place in music by creating indelible, smash-hits like "Shine", "Breathe", "December", "The World I Know", "Gel", "Heavy", "Precious Declaration" and more. The band's new album BLOOD is the culmination of a quarter-century of assessing not only where they’ve come from, but also where they’re going. “I think BLOOD expresses where we’ve been on this life journey,” observes frontman Ed Roland. “And we’ve done so with songs featuring piano and strings to those with a lot of guitar riffs. BLOOD is an accumulation of all the different styles we’ve used over the years — but it’s still Collective Soul. I think it’s the best we’ve ever done.” From the hard-charging skitter of "Over Me" to the optimistic declaration of "Right As Rain", the hopeful uplift of a man "Changed", and the tender promise of "Big Sky", BLOOD delivers in full from stem to stern.
Joel Rafael’s tenth album ROSE AVENUE gracefully defines him and his contribution to the American canon. The ten-song masterpiece includes nine originals that reflect the honest accounting of a man in his 70th year. On ROSE AVENUE Rafael’s perception goes a little deeper because he has lived life, and that has given him better insight into the songs he is writing; as well as a full measure of gratitude for what has been, and what lies before him.
From the moment it bursts from the blocks with its menacing lead single 'Mother,' Future Dust barely pauses for breath. Fuck fooling about. The Amazons' sublime second album is as explosive as expected from the Reading rockers and is packed with surprises no one saw coming. Future Dust is an album that retools rock's dark past for the present day while having an absolute blast. Loose blues grooves, religious references and falsetto backing vocals abound on songs that explore a variety of issues.

The idea for Layers began to percolate a couple years ago, as Marshall was finding success with his joyous pop-band Walk off the Earth, the YouTube overachievers–turned–Juno winners. Still, he’d always envisioned himself falling somewhere between the musically transcendent Bob Dylan and Bon Iver. An emotionally tumultuous album, Layers is the sound of Marshall evincing everything from toxic relationships past to present insecurities and is the next-level output of an artist without boundaries.
Dream pop legends The Ocean Blue release their first new album in over 6 years - Kings and Queens / Knaves and Thieves on Korda Records. The Ocean Blue arrived as the 1980s drew to close, and their debut record on famed Sire Records (Madonna, The Cure, The Smiths, Talking Heads) seemed to summarize the best of the musical decade. The band of four teenagers from Hershey, PA quickly achieved widespread acclaim and Top 10 Modern Rock/College Radio & MTV airplay, with hits like ''Between Something and Nothing'', ''Drifting, Falling'', ''Ballerina Out of Control'' and ''Sublime''. After a busy decade, the band left the majors in the late 1990s and continued with independent releases over the next decade, culminating with 2013's Ultramarine, hailed as one of their best albums. They've now returned with another signature album, the beautifully powerful Kings and Queens / Knaves and Thieves. The LP package is pressed on 140 gram vinyl and contains a digital download card.
The self-titled debut album from Phoenix rap trio, Injury Reserve, made up of producer Parker Corey and rappers Stepa J. Groggs and Ritchie With a T, and featuring guest artists Aminé, Rico Nasty, DRAM, and Freddie Gibbs, focuses on bridging the gap between experimental and accessible. After recording their debut mixtape in a dentist’s office (entitled Live from the Dentist Office), the group has had an interesting journey from playing house shows to being played on Beats 1 Radio by Ebro.
Having released six best-selling albums since he first exploded onto the pop scene in 2002, including 4x UK #1 albums & 2x #2s with most selling over half a million albums, Will Young has found a new beginning of sorts with Lexicon, his seventh studio album to be released. It is the first time he will release a record via an independent label Cooking Vinyl and for the first time, he has no management, having come to the conclusion that authority is not something he thrives upon. "There has been zero stress," he explains, happily.
On the band's 20th anniversary, stalwart roots collective Hackensaw Boys present a fresh batch of original songs with their new EP A Fireproof House of Sunshine. For the ever-evolving string band, the 5-song collection showcases their graceful maturation and feels more timeless than timely, in no small part due to frontman David Sickmen's most deeply cultivated songwriting to date. Energized by the band's new fiddler (Caleb Powers), upright bassist (Chris Stevens), and percussionist/charismo player (Beau Dodson), A Fireproof House of Sunshine keeps Hackensaw Boys' classic punk-fueled roots sound at the center. Yet here the group further explores within genre, from the rollicking contemporary Americana of "Late Night Kitchen" and "Pass Unloving Eyes" to the country-blues working class anthem "Factory Blues," all while maintaining a toe-tapping pop sensibility. A Fireproof House of Sunshine opens the curtain on a new era for Hackensaw Boys, who continually prove capable of turning universal life experiences into music that fosters togetherness, community, and understanding.
